- Are you solving the right problem? Einstein famously said, "If I were given one hour to save the planet, I would spend 59 minutes defining the problem and one minute resolving it." The often overlooked but critical first step in analytical thinking is before you try to solve a problem, make sure you understand it. Adequate problem identification sets the stage for a smooth thinking process. You may feel tempted to jump into action whenever you're presented with an issue, but if you don't understand the problem at hand, you risk wasting your time and resources solving for the wrong problem.
