- Have you ever heard of social math? It's a great way to make your numbers count. As a data professional, it's a technique I've used throughout my career to make numbers more relatable. Numbers are my passion, and have a life of their own in my eyes, but I recognize they're not so attractive to the majority of people, and can even be intimidating. Numbers that are too small or too large aren't tangible, fail to stick in our memories, and can lead to confusion. If you're using numbers to present the severity of a problem or the outcome of a project, your audience may not truly comprehend the scale or impact unless you put it into perspective. Social math is a way to bring data to life through the use of analogy, making it more approachable, relatable, and memorable. By simplifying complex, large numbers and transforming them into concepts that people find more familiar, you can communicate with greater impact.
