- Benjamin Franklin said by failing to prepare, you are preparing to fail. Preparation is an essential part of the process for engaging in conversations about polarizing topics. Preparation involves the planning aspects for an impending conversation. When preparing for the conversation, we are asking and answering for ourselves, the who, the what, the why, the where, the how, and the when. Why are we having this conversation? Who should be a part of the dialogue and why? What's the desired outcome? How should the conversation be conducted? Where should the conversation be held? And when will the conversation take place? Here's an example. I worked with a US-based client who wanted to create a space where employees who were impacted by recent incidents involving police shootings in the African-American community.
