- Why can't you see things from my perspective? Were you even listening? Engaging and inclusive conversations requires reaching some level of shared understanding. Shared meaning is critical because you cannot attempt to explore potential differences if you don't first establish some kind of common ground. What do we agree on? The key ingredients to getting to shared meaning are first creating a brave zone, where you agree to stretch the boundaries of your comfort, inclusive listening, are you really listening to each other, focusing on self-awareness, what's going on for me right now, describing before interpreting the situation, choosing curiosity over judgment, using I statements instead of you language, asking a lot of clarifying questions, and lastly, and really most importantly, admitting mistakes.
