- [Voiceover] In this section, What to Know, we'll cover Fault Tree Analysis. What it is, why you would use it and where you would use it. That is, under what circumstances is a technique is applicable in general and specifically within problem management activities. We'll finish by covering how to do it, the actual steps. So let's get started. Fault tree analysis is a technique for identifying the chain of events that is caused or may cause a problem. For example, a service outage or performance degradation. Fault tree analysis links basic, resultant, conditional and trigger events using boolean logic operators, AND, OR, XOR, INHIBIT and the like, to graphically illustrate chains of events and the logic behind them. Events are states. The diagram here shows a top level event, no light in the room, and shows that either the bulbs are burned out or there's no power to the room, or both.
