Define resources in your schedule
- [Narrator] After you identify the resources you need, it's time to set them up in your schedule. How you define resources, depends on the scheduling program you use. Labor resources are work resources, and that is, you track them by the time they devote to your project. You specify work resources availability, such as full-time or half-time. Resource calendars are great for defining when work resources are available. To calculate project costs, you also specify work resources, cost per hour, or other time unit. You might include an overtime rate too. What about equipment and facilities you assigned by time? Maybe a crane costs $500 per day, or extra office space you'll need for the duration of the project costs $5,000 per month. Go ahead and set these up as work resources, too. That way, you can create calendars to specify when they're available. And also calculate cost by how long you need them. Material resources are tracked by quantity, not time. For example, computers that you purchase for a project or manufacturing equipment that gets turned over to operations when the project is complete. You specify how many you need and the cost per unit. In construction, for example, you would include materials and their measurement units like cubic yards of concrete, linear feet of molding or sheets of drywall. Projects often use other types of non-work resources that contribute to the project cost and might affect the schedule such as building permits, travel, and fixed-price subcontracts. For these resources, you simply specify the resource cost. If you need to specify quantity, set it to one. Depending on the scheduling program you use, you might set these resources up as material, cost-related resources or another type. After you specify the availability, quantities, and cost for all required resources, you're ready to assign them to activities.
