What is a problem hypothesis?
- Before you begin testing any idea through customer discovery, you need to form some basic assumptions. We start by developing a problem hypothesis in talking to real, potential customers to figure out their needs. It's important to note that first and foremost, this is a problem hypothesis and not a product hypothesis. You're most concerned with identifying the users problems or needs and less about your specific solution. For instance, Evan Williams, the founder of Blogger, saw that while blogging was becoming more popular, most people weren't interested in creating long form content. He thought that by building a platform that allowed users to create micro blogs, or small pieces of content, he would attract a ton of users who were interested in sharing their voice. He ended up creating a platform that allowed users to write 140 character updates which you may recognize as Twitter. His assumption became a problem hypothesis that was the starting point to his customer development…
