When and how to find a sponsor
- Finding a mentor, or a mentor board of directors, can be critical to taking your performance to the next level. But it's important to investigate a very specific variety of mentor, a sponsor. A mentor in general is someone who cares about you and gives you advice. That's obviously incredibly valuable. But having a sponsor is a step up from that in terms of its effect on your career, because a sponsor is someone who not only advises you but is willing to expend political capital on your behalf. That's the person who, in the meeting where the big decision is being made, steps up and says, we need to give her the promotion, or he really deserves this raise. So how do you find a sponsor?
