- Under the GHS system of hazard communication, each chemical is classified by the manufacturer according to the hazard that chemical could pose. Hazards are divided into classes and then further subdivided into categories. Chemicals and products are classified as hazardous if they pose either a physical risk, a risk to a person's health or a risk to the environment. Physical hazards are those that can cause harm to a person's body. These might require special handling or storage precautions. Personal protective equipment or PPE might be required to protect you in case of mishandling. Health hazards present dangerous to human health. So to work safely with the chemical, you may need to wear specific PPE to protect you. This could include requirements such as wearing a respirator to protect your respiratory system.
