Prioritizing action over procrastination
- Most people believe that they'll wake up one day magically feeling motivated to get into action and achieve their goals, but it doesn't work that way. It's not motivation that leads us to take action. We know from neuroscience that it's the other way around. Action triggers motivation. When you take action and achieve a small goal you get a shot of dopamine that activates your brain's reward pathway making you want to do it again. Motivation. So instead of procrastinating and putting off starting, here are three simple tips to gear you to take action. Do the quick things first. If a task takes less than five minutes rather than ruminating on it, just do it right away. Simulate a sense of urgency. Use The Pomodoro Technique and set a timer for 20 minutes or longer and focus on the task until the alarm goes off. Take a five minute break and repeat. Stimulus control. Put away and silence anything that distracts you. Phone tabs, email notifications. Make taking action your goal.
