Preparing for your first meeting with your mentor
- Preparing for your first meeting with your mentor can be scary, but don't you worry. You have me. I'm here to help. The first thing we need to know before entering into any mentoring meeting is what's your purpose? For example, are you looking for career progression in your current role, looking to set yourself up for the next promotion, or looking to transition into a new business function within the company? You want to make sure you have these questions answered first. Do your research on your mentor. You should already know their background, any publications they wrote or speaking engagements they were a part of. Remember, as the mentee, it is your responsibility to guide the conversation with your mentor. If you can make them think, wow, this person knows a lot about me, they will be more willing to help you achieve your overall goal. Keep these things in mind whenever you're preparing for your first meeting with your mentor.
