From the course: Microsoft Project Step by Step: Planning for Successful Project Management

Describe the benefits of scheduling

Scheduling can help your organization drive success. Now, imagine hopping in your car and begin driving with no idea where you're going, who you're going with, and how much it will cost. In fact, not even knowing what you need to keep your car running. Well, that's similar to how an effective project is handled. We need to do something, but we don't have a plan on how to do it. When I explain the concept of scheduling, I frequently say we are making a roadmap for success. On our driving trip, this could be our plan for where we are going. Now, this doesn't mean that things won't change along the way, but at least we have a plan to work from. Scheduling is more advanced than just a simple to do list because it incorporates order of relationships between tasks, it has assignments, and even includes costs. Organizations use scheduling to help manage tasks, resources, costs at the level of detail desired. Project Online Desktop Client is a powerful database which provides numerous views and reports to help you communicate key information tailored to your leaders, team members, or other stakeholders. Using this scheduling solution, you can even track progress to determine if you will finish on time. Although scheduling is a function of this tool, we are going to use the word "Plan" throughout this course because you're creating a plan for success. Plan your project by using Microsoft Project Online Desktop Client and have an organized approach to drive success.
