The enemy of risk is fear

- Fear prevents us from realizing psychologically safe work environments. This can be fear of offending or of being offended, fear of being wrong, fear of being labeled one thing or another, fear of the unknown. But we have to risk it, risk being wrong, risk feeling awkward, or even taking a misstep. To ensure the safety of our people, we have to be brave. I've shared quite a few stories from the Way Makers Change Group Narrative Inquiry Study to drive home the importance of visibility, respect, and value. Here's one more, and it's about safety. A black female retail worker shared an unpleasant interaction with a customer return. Because the store policy required a receipt and the customer didn't have one, the employee denied the return. The customer responded aggressively, even began hurling racial slurs and asked for the manager. The manager walked up, told the customer that the return would not be accepted and that her behavior would not be tolerated. The customer was then escorted…
