How safety leads to innovation
- The last and most profound need everyone has in the workplace is the need to be protected. This may sound like a strange concept to talk about at work, but with division at an all time high, work environments have unfortunately become magnets for misunderstandings and missed opportunities. If I've learned anything about truly inclusive workplaces, it's that they do not and cannot exist when people feel unsafe. When people can't share their ideas without fear of ridicule, when they can't challenge the status quo or defend themselves when harmed, or when they can't ask for what they need or deserve, they will not feel part of the team. What happens when people are unafraid to share unorthodox approaches or ideas? Creativity flows and with it, innovation. What happens when people can raise concerns without fear of retribution? Business risks are mitigated. What happens to teamwork and loyalty when employees know their peers support them and will intervene to disrupt workplace harm?…
