Simplify IP subnetting

- Hello, and welcome to Learning Subnetting. My name is Kevin Wallace and I'm going to be leading you through a series of videos designed to help you get great at the skill of IP subnetting. Maybe you're doing this for the real world, or doing some sort of a design. Maybe you're going after certification. This skill is critical for certifications such as Cisco's CCNA in Routing and Switching, and CompTIA's Network+ Certification. But regardless of your motivation, here's what we're going to be learning. We're going to start out by understanding why do we need IP subnetting in the first place and what is it? Then, we'll get a bit mathematical. We'll start out easy with some binary numbering, and then we'll build on that. We'll be able to calculate the number of hosts in a subnet. We'll be able to say given a specific subnet mask, calculate the subnets that get created. We'll calculate the range of usable addresses and you're going to get plenty of practice in this video series. Not just through the videos, but we've also got some downloadable exercises for you. Now, before we get going, I thought you might want to know just a bit about my background since we're going to be spending so much time together in this series, so here's my super-quick bio. I've been in the networking industry for three decades. I was a network designer down at Walt Disney World in Florida, I was a network manager at a university, I've written a bunch of books, done a bunch of video courses on networking. When it comes to technical certifications, my highest level certifications are from Cisco. I've got two CCIEs, one in Route Switch and one in Collaboration, and I cannot wait to simplify for you the skill of IP subnetting. Let's get started.
