How to conduct a courtesy interview

- Have you ever applied for an internal position and felt the hiring manager had made their hiring decision before your interview? Current employees applying for an internal promotion is the most common use for courtesy interviews. In fact, some companies have policies that require that all internal candidates be interviewed, even when it's clear they would not be able to achieve the performance objectives of the job. However, courtesy interviews can cause several problems. First, your employee gets anxious, but excited about a job beyond their capabilities. In turn, they share their excitement with family, friends, and coworkers. Secondly, they spend time preparing for an interview that will not lead to a new job. Third, other employees notice and may stop applying for promotions or new roles.
