- Now, as you prepare to speak up about racism at work, be prepared for potential tangents and sidebars. Very often these conversations make people uncomfortable, so they simply don't want to talk about it. In fact, they'll want to talk about anything else but that. So be prepared for them to springboard to any other issue. There are a couple of ways to address this. First, you can preempt this behavior by narrowly focusing your questions and comments. For example, if you have concerns about the lack of diversity in executive ranks, you could ask this question two different ways. Option one, how do you think we're doing on diversity and inclusion in leadership? Or option two, how many Black people are represented on the executive leadership team right now? Now question one can be an invitation for a vague general talking points. If they want to avoid any serious analysis, number one gives them a platform to do just that.…
