Why relationship building is like managing your bank account
- If relationship building seems scary or difficult, it's probably because you've been approaching it the wrong way. If we want to build great relationships, we need to understand the fundamentals of how great relationships are formed. My favorite analogy for this is something that you use all the time, your bank account. So let's say that a referral into your dream job will cost you 20 social dollars. Like a real bank account, if you try to make that $20 withdrawal when you have no money in the account, that's going to lead to a number of negative consequences. In the real world, you'd overdraft your account. You'd be charged a fee. And if you did this too many times, the bank actually might shut your account down, right? The same goes for this relationship that you're trying to build. Withdrawing without enough social capital can lead to people ignoring you or saying no to you or any number of negative consequences…
