Using bridges to keep the conversation focused

- In media training, we teach people how to deflect a reporter's questions when they don't want to answer or when they want to bring the discussion back on topic if it strays away. The technique used is called bridging, and it also applies to having an honest conversation with your boss. When we bridge, we move the conversation from the current topic back to the original or even a new topic. Here's an example of how it works. Let's say you're talking to your boss about a promotion you want, and your boss says, "I know you think you're qualified for this new job, but I have to tell you, the number of women promoted to management in this company is not great. I know they're bringing in a consultant to talk to the executives about improving diversity because it's an important selling point for our company with customers.
