- The musician Jimi Hendrix said, "When the power of love overcomes the love of power, the world will know peace." Power can be a great thing or a negative quality. And when used inappropriately at work, it can make an honest conversation almost impossible. Power is present in all work environments, from the kindergarten teacher who needs to assert authority to control a group of five-year-olds to the CEO who must deliver bad news to shareholders. Power often comes from things like cultural nuances. Certain cultures place a different value on how men and women communicate, where people sit at a table, or whether or not to stand when a person walks into the room. Cultural nuances could be at play if you and your boss come from different backgrounds. Age and tenure often play a part in determining power.
