- You've heard it said before that you only get one chance to make a first impression, but you really only get about 90 seconds to set the right tone for an honest conversation. The first minute and a half of this important meeting sets the stage for how you'll behave, how your boss will react to you, and whether or not your ideas will be met with receptiveness or resistance. I know that sounds like a lot of pressure, and it is, but there are ways you can establish trust and credibility early on that will benefit you in this conversation. First, be careful of small talk. Sometimes when we're nervous, we start telling jokes or sharing random stories or pointing out meaningless observations. We do this as an attempt to start the conversation without really starting the conversation. If you do this, it could hurt your credibility. Think about it.
