- As you imagine meeting your boss for this honest conversation, do you envision having a robust conversation or a battle? Setting up the scenario is important because your ability to clearly and confidently make your case will go a long way towards your boss endorsing and advocating for your needs. To make your case and ensure the conversation stays on track and remains healthy and respectful, I suggest you follow these steps. First, present your case and state your goal. As you share the reason you are asking for what you need, consider the goal from both your side and your employer's side. For example, if you want the money to pursue additional training, what benefit will that provide your employer? Then offer a rationale such as, "This additional training gives our department deeper capabilities, it makes our team more valuable to the company, and allows us to better serve our internal customers," and then…
