One-tailed vs. two-tailed tests
- [Instructor] When we perform hypothesis tests, we're looking for outcomes that are out of the ordinary. Statistically, what does that mean? Well, if we look at our normal distribution curve, it means that we're looking for outcomes that are on the fringes, outcomes that are in the tail sections of our distribution. We have two tails, one on the right and one on the left. Sometimes we're testing for outcomes that are far too low. They are on the left side. Sometimes we're testing for outcomes that are far too high. Those are on the right side, and sometimes we're looking for outcomes that are generally far away from the mean. So we're looking for outcomes either very far to the right or very far to the left. This is why we have three types of tests.
