Holding yourself accountable
- As a leader, it's critical to have and enforce standards. The first place you need to enforce the standards is on yourself, because again, your team is watching you for predictable behavior. So being able to set that standard and hold yourself accountable is a critical aspect of leading yourself. Now, accountability is an external force. If I give you an assignment, and then I make sure that you follow through on the assignment and perform as required, and meet the standard, and then dish out consequences if it's not performed well, that's accountability. Responsibility is when we hold ourselves accountable, when we don't need someone looking over our shoulder, and we say, I know this standard and I'm going to behave in this manner that's consistent with my own performance standards, and your team is watching you to see if you're responsible, if you hold yourself accountable to the same standards that you hold them to.
