- So far you've seen two popular ethics theories: there's deontology, which focuses on duties, and utilitarianism that tries to increase total happiness. These ethical theories can lead to various different conclusions. The important thing to remember is, you want to think clearly about your ethical arguments. So, think about it this way. The last few years have seen an explosion of ransomware attacks. Ransomware is a specific type of software that holds your organization's data hostage in return for a payment. The ransom program SamSam, for example, collected nearly six million in ransom and cost different organizations nearly 30 million in lost data. Now, imagine you're working for an organization that's been attacked by ransomware. The ransomers are asking for $50,000 in cryptocurrency. If you don't pay up, they'll erase $10 million in data.
