A new definition of leadership
- We are living at a moment in time where the need for good leadership couldn't be greater. The beautiful thing is that it turns out that there is a resource that is readily available, because there is a remarkable number of people walking the planet who are not fully realizing their potential for impact and influence. And so the conversation that we are having with the world is how do we get those people into the game? And, you know, we call it the leadership bench, right? There are a lot of people today who are sitting on the leadership bench and are looking for a way into the game, and in our experience, the barriers to those people getting up and getting into this game are actually quite small and easy to remove and removable with their own time, energy, and attention, and that's what we're here to talk about. - And that's the part that's incredible about that is that it's quite literally a frame of mind, right? That if, if we make the decision to leave, we get to leave. Leadership is about making others better as a result of our presence, and that's part one, and that means that it's about others. It's not about ourselves. Which has been, it's not how I grew up. I grew up thinking that leader, like, leader was the aspirational place that you can become, and then it's about others serving the leader. Fundamentally no. Leadership is about making others better as a result of our presence, and then the most enduring part of it, the sustainability, is having that last into our absence, and that's the part that is, it's super addictive and it brings great optimism to the challenges, even the challenges faced today, because if we have all of the people that can be doing this working on today's challenges, they become, in my mind, very, we can overcome them, because we have so much potential. - And so, you know, we encourage people to think about it in a different way and to start with the assumption that leadership at its core is not about you, you know? It's not about you. It's not about us. It's about how effective you are at enabling the success of other people. - And honestly, by the end of this, we really want people to simply begin. - Yeah. - Like, I think that we, our performance measure won't be that it's simply a thought, but that people can start making others better quite literally tomorrow.
