- Trust takes time to build. Our team at the Santa Barbara Zoo has grown significantly over the last decade. And across that growth, we maintained a very flat organizational structure. While this approach kept all the employees connected to the top so to speak, it didn't really allow for much growth within functions and cross-functional teaming was minimal. Longevity made internal promotion difficult, and outside of our directors, cross-functional collaboration was rare. With the hope of tackling all these issues, we decided to make the organization less flat. We added a layer of managers and taking a field of dreams approach, I thought this new team would engage and behave much like the director team. Now, hold that thought. Think back to high school.
