Timing your message effectively

- We hear this all the time. Timing is everything. That also applies to communicating with tact. Calculating when the right time is for you to respond and getting it right is what will make you a true diplomat. When I say timing, I'm referring to either responding just in time or deciding to address the situation at a later time. When you decide to address the situation later, time of day, week or quarter, could play a big factor in your diplomacy. If your boss is very upset about something you did and expresses it in an email, it's best to respond with a request to have a face-to-face conversation and not try to address the issue right away. If your colleague is frustrated with the way you did something and tells you in person, it might be a smart idea to acknowledge the frustration, apologize for making things difficult and ask for a common solution.
