- [Narrator] No matter how else they may differ. All Linux distributions include the Linux kernel. Otherwise of course they wouldn't be Linux distributions. But distributions do make choices about the kernel and how it's treated when new releases become available. The official Linux kernel is maintained by a group of people who are responsible for building, testing and supporting it. You can learn more about this at kernel.org. Because the kernel is open source, many distribution maintainers make their own changes to the kernel source code before compiling it and including it in their distributions. Some distributions remove parts that aren't needed in their implementation. For example, in embedded systems, it's common for maintainers to remove support for hardware their customized systems will never have to communicate with.
