- [Scott] When we get started using Linux, we need to choose a Linux distribution to use. Linux distributions are all slightly different from each other, and there's hundreds of them to choose from. So making that choice can seem very intimidating. But it doesn't have to be. I'm Scott Simpson. And in this LinkedIn Learning course, I'll cover some history and some differences in release models, system management, and software package management that you should be aware of as you decide which distribution is right for you. We'll explore the various major differences between Linux distributions, and then we'll spend some time exploring seven common Linux distributions. For these, you're welcome to follow along or to just sit back and see if there's one or two you particularly like. We'll cover the basics of each of these distributions, go through the installation process, and spend some time using each of them so we have a foundation from which to continue learning. The purpose of this course is not to show you every detail of every distribution out there, but to give you a framework to understand how distributions differ and in what ways they're the same. In many ways, most distributions are very similar to each other in daily use if you're not going to be doing much system administration. But when we get into the details of managing the system, that's where most of the differences reveal themselves. I'm not trying to sell you on any particular distribution. I have my favorites and I'll mention those as we go along. But the goal is to prepare you to evaluate your own needs and to decide how different distributions may serve them. Let's go.
