Why cybersecurity matters
- [Instructor] When you're building and growing your startup, prioritizing and managing your business risks is standard practice. You're racing to make your idea a reality to bring it to market before your competitors do. At the same time, you've got the board asking you how soon you'll be profitable and how soon the investors can expect to receive a return on their investment. But if you haven't included cyber security as one of those business risks, then you're operating at a disadvantage. That term, cyber security, gets thrown around quite a bit these days, often without any effort to make sure everyone involved in the conversation even understands what cybersecurity really means. Complexity aside, cybersecurity focuses on three basic ideas. Confidentiality, or keeping your secrets secret, integrity, or knowing that you can trust your systems and your data, and availability, or knowing that your systems will be online when you and your customers expect them to be. Within the industry, these three ideas are known as the CIA triad. In the startup world, cybersecurity is just one more risk area that you need to address. While you're managing your go to market risks like competitors and funding, you'll also do well to manage cybersecurity risks. But don't fall into the trap of thinking that cybersecurity is just a cost of doing business. More forward thinking startups realize that cybersecurity can be a market differentiator. You can weaponize that investment to accelerate your growth while protecting your people and your company. In the next video, I'll share some stories and some advice to help you do the same.
