From the course: Applied Fixed Income

Course introduction

- Hi, my name is Andrew Loo, and I'm the VP of Capital Markets here at CFI. I'm truly excited to be bringing you this course on applied fixed income. In my over 20 years working for large, multinational investment banks in the fixed income space, I firmly believe that I've gained a lot of insight into these markets. Therefore, I'm very excited to have this opportunity to share my knowledge with you so that you too can become an expert in fixed income. This course builds upon the foundations that we laid in our fixed income fundamentals course, so we may only give you a quick refresher on the topics already covered. If you haven't taken that course or feel that you may have forgotten some of these concepts, I would very much encourage you to review that course before taking this one. Additionally, what we talked a lot about theory in the Fixed Income Fundamentals course, this course will deal mostly with applying these theories on specific products such as the effective duration of a floating rate note, or how yield curves differ on various government agency debt. In this course, we'll introduce the concept of the credit stack in fixed income markets and look at the highest grade products. Governments, GSE, and SSA, and we'll discuss the characteristics of each market, the types of securities that exist within each group, and how certain instruments are originated, bought, and sold. We'll build upon the materials previously covered and dive deeper into zero coupon bonds, floating rate notes, as well as inflation linked securities. Lastly, we'll explore lightly structured fixed income securities that have embedded call or put options, and the mechanics behind their pricing, trading, and risk metrics. Throughout this course, you'll be watching video lectures, participating in interactive exercises, and seeing the exact screens from leading market data providers that finance professionals use. At the end of the course, you'll take a qualified assessment to test what you've learned. This course will teach you what's needed for even more advanced fixed income topics in our later courses.
