A framework for ethical decision-making
- All of us face ethical decisions from time to time, and they're particularly common in a business context. These dilemmas aren't all of the same magnitude, with some being relatively straightforward and others being remarkably difficult. A person making an ethical decision must account for considerations such as organizational values, regulations, laws, policies, public opinion, and even personal morality. The responsibility to make difficult choices isn't spoken about nearly enough and is seldom included in a job description. To protect and support the individual, the organization, and other stakeholders, providing frameworks and processes can go a long way. While there's certainly no perfect way to make an ethical decision, a predictable process and framework can help to bring clarity and support in how to proceed.
