The Department of Energy has funded $6 million in research projects for an inaugural partnership in two DOE offices to better prepare the nation for multiple disruptive power events and enable rapid response in a crisis for U.S. grid operators. DOE’s Office of Science Advanced Scientific Computing Research (ASCR) and DOE’s Office of Electricity (OE) will guide the research at five of the nation’s national laboratories in a new partnership. The need for faster computing of the vast amount of data on the grid will be addressed. Key applications include: Electric Utilities: LDES captures and releases energy over extended periods—whether hours, days, or seasons—facilitating the integration of renewable sources and ensuring reliable, dispatchable power for grid stability. Data Centres: With resilience spanning from hours to days, LDES ensures continuous operations during power disruptions while advancing sustainability initiatives. Microgrids: LDES replaces diesel generators in critical infrastructure, such as hospitals and research campuses, boosting reliability, reducing emissions, and optimising renewable energy use. Island Grids: LDES stores surplus renewable energy, maintaining grid stability during disruptions caused by weather events or equipment failures in isolated areas. Industrial Processes: By storing electricity as heat, LDES supports the decarbonisation of energy-intensive sectors like steelmaking and cement production.
