This knowledge helps prevent the development of unrealistic mathematical formulations that fail to replicate experimental results or the natural behavior of these structures. 💡 In our recent research, we investigated the loading rate-dependent energy dissipation of polymer structures fabricated using grayscale masked stereolithography. Our research on "Aqueous Electrochromic Batteries" has been published in American Chemical Society ACS Applied Materials & Interfaces! In this study, we explored the potential of aqueous electrochromic batteries (ECBs) for renewable rechargeable technology. Our findings reveal that Jahn–Teller distortion induced by interlayer water serves as an excellent ion host for zinc-ion aqueous electrolyte ECBs. This results in superior redox reactivity, optical modulation, capacity, and cyclic stability compared to AWO. 🚨 New publication alert! A recent paper by final-year PhD student Xinjie Guan, A/Prof. Chris Menictas and Prof. Maria Skyllas-Kazacos, discusses the development of an advanced electrochemical stack model for the MV/TEMPTMA aqueous organic flow battery. The model can predict battery performance over multiple cycles, considering ion diffusion and degradation effects. This research makes significant advancements in large-scale, low-cost energy storage solutions and can be adapted for other non-mixing aqueous organic flow batteries. An article by Dr. Hyunsoo Kim, assistant professor of physics, has been featured in a commentary in the prestigious Nature Physics journal. https://lnkd.in/dDgArzND "Now, Hyunsoo Kim and colleagues have demonstrated superconductivity below 5.4 K in a lab-grown sample of Rh17S15 (pictured), which is also found in nature as the mineral miassite (H. Kim et al. Commun. Mater. 5,17; 2024). Interestingly, the superconducting properties of this compound are quite different from those seen in most of the known superconductors."

In this work, the theoretical analysis of random telegraph noise (RTN) signals required first-principles simulations of gated metal-insulator-semiconductor (MIS) heterojunctions. This was done based on our multi-space density functional theory (MS-DFT) formalism, which allows simulations that are not possible (or at least straightforward) with equilibrium DFT or DFT-based non-equilibrium Green's function (NEGF) methods. This KAIST-NYU collaboration represents an excellent example showcasing the power of MS-DFT and the necessity of continued method developments for first-principles technology computer-aided design (TCAD) simulations. This article describes a study on a novel electride, K(NH₃)₂, which exhibits a quasi-2D spin-Peierls transition influenced by interstitial anionic electrons. Researchers from Nanjing University utilized advanced crystal structure prediction and first-principles calculations to explore this material under moderate pressures. They discovered that electron-phonon interactions and electron-electron correlations in this material could lead to unique quantum phenomena such as zigzag-type anti-ferromagnetism and lattice dimerization under higher pressures, suggesting potential applications in magnetic interactions and charge density wave exploration. *****New Publication Alert ***** New paper in the American Chemical Society’s #ACSEnergyLetters journal. “Electron-Donating or -Withdrawing Groups of Carbonate Solvent on Lithium-Ion (De-)intercalation Chemistry”. Cyclic carbonate solvents have been extensively utilized as cosolvents and/or additives in formulating electrolytes for lithium-ion batteries. However, their application often relies on empirical knowledge, lacking a universally applicable perspective to elucidate how different functional groups in cyclic carbonates affect battery performance. Herein, by focusing on the substituted functional group at the α-H in the ethylene carbonate (EC) solvent, it is discovered that solvents containing electron-withdrawing groups (e.g., −F) enable reversible Li+ (de)intercalation in graphite electrodes, while those with electron-donating groups (e.g., −CH3, −CH2CH3) may lead to Li+-solvent co-intercalation. Furthermore, solvents with electron-withdrawing groups can help the electron-donating groups achieve Li+ (de)intercalation, whereas the reverse is not feasible. These phenomena are elucidated through intermolecular interactions, characterized by 2D 1H–19F heteronuclear Overhauser enhancement spectroscopy, revealing interactions between electron-withdrawing and -donating groups in the electrolyte solvation structure. New Article Alert: “High Voltage Electrolyte Design Mediated by Advanced Solvation Chemistry Toward High Energy Density and Fast Charging Lithium-Ion Batteries” @Advanced Energy Materials. https://lnkd.in/gfSMjiwC Electrolyte is critical for transporting lithium-ion (Li+) in lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). However, there is no universally applicable principle for designing an optimal electrolyte. In most cases, the design process relies on empirical experiences and is often treated as highly confidential proprietary information. In the article, a solvation structure-related model for the quantitative design of electrolytes is introduced, focusing on the principles of coordination chemistry. As a paradigmatic example, a high-voltage electrolyte (i.e., 4.5 V vs anode) aimed at achieving a high energy density and fast charging LIB, which is specifically composed of an emerging, well-constructed hybrid hard carbon-silicon/carbon-based anode, and lithium cobalt oxide cathode, is developed. Not only the functions of each electrolyte component at the molecular scale within the Li+ solvation structure are analyzed but also an interfacial model is introduced to elucidate their relationship with the battery performance. This study represents a pioneering effort in developing a methodology to guide electrolyte design, in which the mutual effects of the Li+ de-solvation process and solid electrolyte interface (SEI) on the electrode surface are explored concurrently to understand the root cause of superior performance. The innovative approach presented in the paper, establishes a new paradigm in electrolyte design, providing valuable insights at the molecular level. Developing technique to track battery aging in real time ◾ Researchers at Argonne National Laboratory (ANL) have developed and shown a new way to monitor battery degradation using nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. This marks the first application of this technique to track chemical changes in commercial pouch cells during operation. ◾ The method allows manufacturers to study battery aging without dismantling cells, providing insights into how electrode materials and electrolytes evolve over months or years of use. ◾ This capability arrives as manufacturers work to integrate silicon anodes into electric vehicle batteries to increase energy density. And, NMR is common in medical imaging, making it a more mature technology, and is a nondestructive and noninvasive technique. ◾ “NMR applications in batteries have been limited until now,” says Argonne chemist Baris Key and one of the authors of the newly published paper on the topic. “This capability could become standard practice for researchers and manufacturers who need to probe battery evolution without cell teardown.” ◾ The research team demonstrated the technique on silicon-anode cells through seven months of cycling. Their findings revealed that lithium atoms become trapped in the anode during charging, forming lithium silicides that reduce the cell’s storage capacity. ◾ Silicon-anode batteries have been used in smartphones, from brands including Honor, OnePlus, Oppo, and more, using batteries developed by leading manufacturer in smartphone cells, TDK. ◾ The tests used commercial-grade pouch cells manufactured at Argonne’s Cell Analysis, Modeling and Prototyping facility. These cells match the construction of EV batteries more closely than laboratory prototypes, enabling more accurate aging studies. ◾ The technique detected that adding magnesium salt to the electrolyte reduced trapped lithium formation. This discovery points to potential solutions involving electrolyte additives to extend silicon anode lifespans. ◾ “What we did in our study was like taking MRIs of operating battery cells, except that we didn’t produce images of the cells,” said Evelyna Wang, an Argonne postdoctoral appointee and the study’s main author. ​“Instead, the output was information on how the lithium chemical environment in the cells changed due to charging, discharging, resting and aging.” ◾ While the initial work focused on silicon anodes, the NMR method can examine other battery technologies, including sodium-ion and solid-state designs. Tuesday publication update! 📖 With this newest published research atomic-scale mechanisms were observed on 2D materials using our #FusionAX system! The authors imaged, atom-by-atom, the thermally induced structural evolution of twisted bilayer transition metal dichalcogenides using in situ transmission electron microscopy. 🔥 The authors used short 0.5-s heat pulses from 100° to 1000°C and took STEM images in between to reduce thermal drift. It was observed at low temperatures that the moiré superlattices morphed into nanoscale aligned domains. It was observed that this process started by nucleating a new grain within one monolayer, its crystal orientation intricately templated by the other. 🔬Unexpectedly, the aligned domains grow through a mesmerizing dance of collective rotation of moiré supercells and the graceful hopping of 5|7 defect pairs at moiré boundaries. These observations offer unprecedented mechanistic insight into the atomic-scale interactions that govern moiré structures, illuminating the potential to pattern interfacial structure and properties of two-dimensional materials at the nanoscale. 📈These research results can be correlated to inconsistent and heterogeneous properties measured in moiré based devices. 【Hydrogel-Based Functional Materials for Thermoelectric Applications: Progress and Perspectives】 Advanced Functional Materials (IF 18.5) Pub Date : 2024-09-02 , DOI:10.1002/adfm.202410127 Hydrogels are renowned for their complex structures and unique physicochemical properties, establishing them as key materials in bioenergy harvesting applications. They are used in various applications, including triboelectric nanogenerators, piezoelectric, hydraulic, thermoelectric, and biofuel cells. Among these, hydrogels as key materials for thermoelectric applications represent a technology capable of continuously converting biological energy (thermal energy) into electrical energy. This technology shows great potential and commercial value in body monitoring, energy storage, and human-machine interaction applications. Given its rapid development, a timely review focusing on the research progress of hydrogels and their composites in thermoelectric technology is presented. This review discusses various types of hydrogels used for thermoelectric power generation and refrigeration, their unique properties, strategies for enhancing their thermoelectric performance, and their applications in the field. 【Efficient Permeable Monolithic Hybrid Tribo-Piezo-Electromagnetic Nanogenerator Based on Topological-Insulator-Composite】 Advanced Materials (IF 27.4) Pub Date : 2024-09-02 , DOI:10.1002/adma.202408936 Escalating energy demands of self-independent on-skin/wearable electronics impose challenges on corresponding power sources to offer greater power density, permeability, and stretchability. Here, a high-efficient breathable and stretchable monolithic hybrid triboelectric-piezoelectric-electromagnetic nanogenerator-based electronic skin (TPEG-skin) is reported via sandwiching a liquid metal mesh with two-layer topological insulator-piezoelectric polymer composite nanofibers. TPEG-skin concurrently extracts biomechanical energy (from body motions) and electromagnetic radiations (from adjacent appliances), operating as epidermal power sources and whole-body self-powered sensors. Topological insulators with conductive surface states supply notably enhanced triboelectric and piezoelectric effects, endowing TPEG-skin with a 288 V output voltage (10 N, 4 Hz), ∼3 times that of state-of-the-art devices. Liquid metal meshes serve as breathable electrodes and extract ambient electromagnetic pollution (±60 V, ±1.6 µA cm−2). TPEG-skin implements self-powered physiological and body motion monitoring and system-level human-machine interactions. Today's seminar speaker at the Department of Chemistry and Physics was Professor Chen-Ting Liao, Department of Physics, Indiana University, Bloomington, IN (https://lnkd.in/ggXTC6QD) (1) Light & Matter & Topology. Broken symmetries are ubiquitous in nature and are associated with phenomena such as ferromagnetism, molecular chirality, optical activity, and vortex beams carrying orbital angular momentum (OAM). These symmetry breakings can lead to the formation  of various topological states and excitations. First, I will show how a novel x-ray imaging technique, called soft x-ray vector ptycho-tomography, can probe topological spin textures in ferromagnetic materials with 10-nm 3D resolution. Next, I will introduce topological states of light carrying OAM, which can be static, ultrafast time-varying, or spatiotemporally coupled. These OAM of light can span the infrared to x-ray spectra when converted and controlled through high harmonic generation processes. Lastly, I will discuss the generation of quantum and classically entangled light fields for potential bioimaging applications and explore pathways to achieving  entangled ultrafast quantum x-rays in the future. (2) Physics (and Chemistry) Careers for Undergraduates. Physics and STEM degree holders are highly employable in both the private and public sectors. However, students and early career scientists may be unaware of non-academic career pathways that exist within industry. This brief talk will provide an overview and examples of common career paths taken by physics and STEM degree holders, as well as give resources to assist with career exploration and job search. The speaker will also discuss his own career path in research, development, and manufacturing in academia and industry. Speaker biography: Dr. Liao is Associate Professor of Physics at Indiana University Bloomington and a member of IU Quantum Science and Engineering Center. Dr. Liao received aBS degree in Space Science and MSc in Physics from National Central University in Taiwan. He received his PhD in Optical Sciences from the University of Arizona in 2017, and then became a postdoc at JILA, a joint research institute at the University of Colorado Boulder and NIST (National Institute of Standards and Technology). In 2021, he became a research scientist at JILA and also served as Assistant Director of Research and Knowledge Transfer at STROBE, an NSF Science & Technology Center. Dr. Liao was a finalist for two PhD thesis awards, including the 2018 WAGS-ProQuest Innovation in Technology Award and the 2019 American Physical Society (APS) Carl E. Anderson Division of Laser Science Dissertation Award. He was selected as the 2022-2023 APS Career Mentoring Fellow. Dr. Liao received the 2023 Air Force Young Investigator Award. Prof. Liao joined the Department in 2023.
