Amazon is building a sports streaming empire, and this NBA deal is the crown jewel of that strategy (so far). 1️⃣ The NBA's new media rights deal, worth a staggering $76 billion, will start in 2025. This MediaVillage.org article by Bill Harvey highlights the value in using search as a leading sales indicator and key data source in forecasting business impact. This is something I’ve been championing for the past two decades. Nearly 20 years ago, we started developing statistical correlations to demonstrate the immediate impact TV had on brand interest and to create a diagnostic tool for understanding deviations from normative benchmarks. This helped many clients understand how media was interconnected and why having a search strategy – something that was novel at the time – was critical to brand growth. These analytics proved particularly insightful during a pitch for a major distilled spirits’ company. Our analysis revealed a significant variance in the correlation between TV and branded searches during the period reviewed (R = -0.24) versus the prior two years (R = 0.40). We dug into this further and discovered the brand had recently launched a new ad campaign, the only notable change in the brand's marketing activity. Our conclusion: The brand had lost its mojo. The new campaign was not resonating with audiences as well as past campaigns, which in turn, led to depressed consumer interest and ultimately, sales. The client's response? "You identified in a couple weeks what has taken us months to figure out." Today, leveraging search data has never been easier. I’ve had 3 journalists reach out this week looking for perspective on the “state of CPG”. The underlying question seems to be: how bad is it? My thoughts: things were easier in 2020, 2021. Yes, capital was widely available. But the consumer was also ripe and ready to spend on goods (more time at home, stimulus checks, and new exposure to CPG through social channels). Acquisition costs were lower. Maybe most importantly there was a general sense of optimism, and a belief, that brands could grow to be big and category-leading (no matter how much $ they were losing), with less consideration for fundamentals. Goes without saying, there’s been a major shift in sentiment from investors and retailers - now more cynical - and we’re coming down from an intense high. It can’t be overstated just how much of a hangover we’re experiencing. It's not only harder to grow and sustain your business (in major contrast to 2 years ago) but it’s, arguably, not as fun. So many people have lost the belief that you can build something out of nothing, create a habit that was never there before, become indispensable in people’s lives without them even knowing they needed it (hi, Bachan's). The hangover clarifies what always mattered: fundamentals, resilience, discipline, patience. And the founders that will win are those that work through the short-term pessimism, double down on their value proposition, and execute. Shout out to Athletic Brewing Co. as a great example of resilience and category definition throughout the boom and bust.

The year and half of infinite scroll on Google Search seemed like forever- Google likely to abandon infinite scroll and head back to pagification. Paramount Wants Half-Off Nielsen Fees "Paramount, which is in the midst of cutting $500 million from its operations, has suggested it should not be paying Nielsen higher prices when the fees come to more than the advertising revenue that TV ratings generate. Paramount, like many of its rivals, spends hundreds of millions on Nielsen measurement each year" Paramount and Nielsen still don’t have a new contract after weeks of negotiation, and the dispute is now once again spilling into the public. If Nielsen CEO Karthik Rao is to be believed, the two parties are still quite far apart, with Paramount seeking to pay half of the fees Nielsen is proposing. Paramount contends that Nielsen’s proposed fees are more than the total advertising revenue of the channels they’re measuring, making it hard to justify the spend for ratings numbers. Likewise, Paramount emphasizes the declining value of Nielsen ratings as more advertising moves to streaming and CTV, where Nielsen has long struggled to capture an accurate picture. All this comes against the backdrop of the rapid decline in traditional television; there’s just not the money in that business that they’re used to be, and Nielsen’s fees may need to adjust to the new reality of the market they’re serving. It continues to amaze me how many of these topics of Streaming Media Struggles are resolved in a simple answer of consolidation within a OmniChannel Platform for streaming like Spotify did for the music industry.
