I hear a lot of stories about how people break into tech these days. My story is a little different. I'll set the scene. It's 2008. I'm studying print design in college at The College of Staten Island, City University of New York. A friend of mine said a professor of his was starting a no-fee bootcamp with 5 other students. (This was a couple of years before coding bootcamps were a thing. He was ahead of his time.) I met with the professor to discuss the details. He said something the effect of "Print is dead, come with me if you want to live...comfortably." Fast forward a few weeks later and we were working out of an art and tech center called Eyebeam in the Chelsea neighborhood of Manhattan in New York. A few months later, we became an agency and I officially swapped Pantone swatches for a keyboard. We made minimum wage while gaining experience building sites for clients. At the same time, I was completing an internship with Spike TV for college credit then got my first job at Marvel as a front-end developer in 2009. 16 years and an appetizer combo platter of companies later and I haven't left the field. I've gained more skills, worked for fortune 500 companies, agencies, and startups, managed teams, saved and earned companies hundreds of thousands of dollars by implementing WCAG standards, work flow procedures, streamlining processes for faster delivery times, and mentored new devs. I've been in tech a long time and have no immediate plans to leave. A few years ago, a study was conducted by Accenture and tech education organization, Girls Who Code. The report indicated half of young women who go into tech leave by age 35. I'm currently expanding my skill set to become full stack by taking courses, contributing to open source, and freelancing. I don't know if it's sheer stubbornness, grit, or passion for building and maintaining products that's keeping me in this field but whatever the reason, I know I can be invaluable to an organization. I've done it before countless times and I can do it again.

Today myself and hundreds of other tech works at my job, The New York Times, are on strike. I'm disappointed and tired that our management, after 2+ years, decided to not work in good faith to come to a fair deal that honors our labor. If you have worked with me before, hopefully you remember that I care deeply about inequity in the workplace. As a Black trans software engineer, I cannot afford to ignore it. Our guild is also seeking “just cause” protections in our first contract, an industry and labor standard that  requires management to have a just and fair reason to discipline an employee. Finally, we’re working to protect remote and hybrid work in our union. Management is eager to claw back the autonomy and work-life balance we gained through remote work despite our proving over the last four years that we can thrive and be successful as remote workers and teams. I’ve worked in various industries in different positions for 15+ years, including: • Digital editor when Facebook became mainstream. • Graphic designer for traditional mediums. • Front-end dev with top NYC creative agencies. • Web3 dev who survived the bear market. I’ve had so much fun during this time, and there isn’t much I would change about my journey. However, I burnt out badly twice. The burnout exhausted me, taking away more fun I could’ve enjoyed. If I could go back, here are a few mistakes I made—and what I would have done differently to avoid burnout: 1️⃣ Lack of boundaries I failed to set clear work-life boundaries, leading to overwork and anxiety. The pandemic and remote work made it worse. I should have set specific work and rest hours and a designated work area to ensure proper recovery. 2️⃣ Failed to manage expectations I didn’t communicate effectively with employers and clients, which led to unrealistic goals and deadlines. I should have taken the initiative to discuss workloads and responsibilities with stakeholders regularly. 3️⃣ Objectify myself at work I measured my worth only by my job performance and output. Taking breaks even made me feel guilty and lazy. I should value myself beyond work and reserve time for personal passions. － By addressing these issues, I could have avoided burnout and enjoyed my career journey more. From "tunnel rat" to senior engineer with FAANG on the resume - a TL;DR of my salary journey in tech: 2005-2015: Worked for the MTA in NYC as a Track Worker. I was literally swinging hammers on the rails, laying down tracks. 2015: Attended General Assembly, a 3-month bootcamp, and learned how to code. Quickly resonated with Front End development. Was the 1st in my class to get a job offer and by the summer I was working at Accenture. This represented an $11k raise from the MTA. 2016: Gave myself a $22k raise and accepted a job at L2 Inc. My first startup! I learned React here as well. Good times. 2017: Gave myself a $24k raise and accepted a job at Transfix. To this day, this was one my my favorite companies to work for. This was a hard company to leave, but I was early in my career making up for lost time in the tunnels. I also spit a verse over a dope beat as my farewell email and sent it to the whole company. 2018: Gave myself a $48k raise - welcome to Bloomberg! At this point I thought I plateaued. I was now making more than 2.5x what I was at Transit. Talk about a life change! God is good. I had no plans of leaving until drastic internal changes happened. 2019-2021: Took a 3k base pay cut but... joined Meta and give myself a significant overall raise due to those sweet, sweet RSUs. God, is this real?! Some of the best working experiences I've ever had. What a ride. 2021-2023: Base pay bump of 30k - now I'm at Coinbase. And still, those sweet, sweet RSUs. Liquid cash is always the best! This would be the company that made me realize I had the "golden handcuffs" on. It's SO hard to walk away from RSUs, but my family would ultimately help me realize there's more to life than money. 2023 - present: 30k base pay bump as I joined the good ship Docker, Inc. Pretty much at the top level (financially) of being a senior engineer but the golden handcuffs are finally off. Being a working parent is a constant balancing act. Between meetings, deadlines, and diaper changes, it can feel like there are never enough hours in the day. Observation: 9/10 SWE's quit at “reading the docs”. Cut through the BS with this easy trick: Take action and build. Writing code is 100x easier than the docs make it sound. “Reading the docs” gave me crazy imposter syndrome: -Git -WPF -Kafka -OAuth -Angular -GraphQL -RabbitMQ -Kubernetes In ALL cases, I conquered my fears by building. Except for WPF. I gave up on that. And Kafka, that's for another day. Forcing yourself to build/code/deploy melts analysis paralysis. Then you'll say "oh that was pretty easy". Trust me, we aren't building rockets. Practice AND Study build true mastery.

In this transformational course, we will use Grading For Equity by Joe Feldman as our anchor text to 1) understand how traditional grading practices impact our students, and 2) how we can use research-based grading policies that are accurate, bias-resistant, motivational, and empowering. Rather than lectures, this course is active and engaging, using the case study method and rigorous discussion to support learning.

Shoutout to Kingsley Orji and Princess Hemen! 🎉 Before I dive into today’s update, I want to take a moment to give a huge shoutout to Kingsley for the incredible designs he's been putting out! And also to Princess, who introduced me to his work — both of you are doing amazing things in your own spaces! (Disclaimer: I’m not being paid to say this, I just genuinely find their work inspiring.) I even used it as an opportunity to test my Flutter skills, and, let me tell you, I found areas I definitely need to work on. But that’s the beauty of this journey — identifying those gaps and fixing them. 💪 Now, back to the topic at hand. What exactly have I been working on? Well, it’s something he call Grabber — an eCommerce platform offering a variety of products, from fresh fruits to beverages, and so much more. 🌱🍹 Building Grabber has been one of the most exciting experiences for me. Every time I sit down to code, I’m learning something new. Take the splash screen, for example. For those unfamiliar, the splash screen is that first screen you see when opening an app — usually with a logo or branding on it. Up until now, I was building splash screens like any other regular screen, with just a short delay (2-4 seconds) for loading purposes. Little did I know there’s a better and more native way to do it! 🤯 Oh, and fonts… don’t even get me started. 😅 I know, I know, this should be a no-brainer, but whenever I’m building something for my portfolio, I tend to overlook small things like fonts.But I’m improving! Animations? Not my strongest suit either — but not because I don’t appreciate them. I simply haven’t dedicated as much time to them. Most of the apps I’ve built so far were from scratch, and I often skip animations because they can take a lot of time to get just right. But it’s something I’m working on because I know how crucial it is for the overall user experience. 🌀✨ Where am I now? Well, I still have a long way to go with both Grabber and my mobile app development journey. My next big challenge? Maps! 🗺️ This will be my first time incorporating a map into a Flutter app, and I’m honestly both excited and nervous.
