Lam Tran is the co-founder and CEO at WisePass, a lifestyle app that connects brands to consumers through events, promotions, and rewards. Before WisePass, he was at Google and Tiki and had grown up French-Vietnamese. ‍ 👋🏼 How would you explain your job to someone outside tech? At networking events, I have a 30-second pitch where I tell people I used to work for Google and my job was to drive traffic to their websites, apps and measure sales for the client. For WisePass, it's pretty much the same but we measure sales offline. For users, I just explain them that it's a membership where you can discover cool new places, access some cool events, get some cool promotions, enjoy some cool rewards for 15 bucks a month. For venues we're working with, we're basically their B2B sales. We drive traffic and sales. Initially we just list and there's no cost. If they want to do more with us and create special offers and build their own VIP customers then we can charge a flat fee for 30 bucks a month.  ‍ 🧐 What's something about you or your job that would surprise us? The beverage industry is still using Excel spreadsheets in 2024. ‍ 🏆 What has been the biggest highlight of your career so far? The breakthrough moment was when I found that the app was used every day and we generated thousands of redemptions earlier in the year 2018. It took me a couple years to get there. Finding the product-market fit for a product that doesn't really exist around the world makes it more difficult. You don't have a blueprint and need to keep trying.  ‍ 🔍 What's a startup trend or space you're watching this year? E-commerce. Day 2 of "30 Days of Product Suggestions" - @ Zicasso CC Yuchun Ku Brian Tan 1) Reduce the "Start Trip Request" form's 4 touchpoints down to 2. - Combine Trip Details, Travel Style, and Budget into one beautifully designed card. Like something you'd see in a Michelin rated restaurant. Remove demographic data of 18-30, 31-50 (it's optional anyways) and focus more on checkboxes and sliders that imply the luxury to come. Skip the big textbox where a user feels pressure to type and replace with checkboxes that encompass the most frequent reasons for travel (according to past users of your site). If not totally crucial, change "Travel Day Date" to more simply a month. If someone is planning a trip 7 months out and is flexible, picking a day may be a friction point... a reason to "come back later". - When the user clicks NEXT, images of their destination cycle on screen to build a sense of anticipation. The images that render relevant to the location or locations selected, but also based on the desire-checkboxes a user selected. In other words: someone wants a Cruise and to Visit Historical Sites? They'll see images curated for whatever location they aim to go to -- perhaps even reviews of great experiences other people have had. - The second touch point is simply contact information. Here you would have the textbox with an "is there anything else you would like to add", and some filters about the type of agent they might be looking to work with. (works with seniors, honeymooners, families etc) The goal is to reduce friction during Discovery phase and get users to submit faster, along with inferring a positive memory of a trip yet-to-be-had. -- From a Dev perspective, you can set up a secondary page so users will randomly be directed to the original or this new flow. You can use this to A/B test in advance of making the change. 2) "Inquire Now" via Travel Agent or Review - When checking out reviews or travel agents, the user may consider one agent better than another, or read a review that makes them want to book with THIS specific person, or because of THAT specific review. However, when you click "Get Matched", it takes you back to the generic form. As an addendum to my first suggestion, it may be worthwhile to have a field where the user can request a specific agent "if available". "If available" is important to maintain expectations if the agent isn't free. NOTE: if you see back-end attrition, equivalent of "abandoned cart" off a review or agent profile page... OR especially from the Get Matched page after viewing an agent or review, you'll have validated the hypothesis. 3) More Sorting & Filtering - While you can visit a country in particular to see reviews and agents, being able to sort &/or filter by destination on the general landing page cuts down on friction. -- As a P.S. There is always so much I could share about the work we are doing here at Coupang and I'm a few months behind sharing this news, but given the last few weeks, I thought it would be good time to re-share. Earlier this year, Coupang announced a Strategic Partnership with the U.S. Department of Commerce’s International Trade Administration (ITA). This marks ITA’s first partnership of its kind with a private-sector e-commerce company, which will focus on supporting U.S. businesses—from small and medium-sized enterprises to larger companies—in their entry into the South Korean market.  The signing ceremony was led by Alex Wong, our Head of Public Affairs and as a US HQ business, but with a significant part of our business here in Korea, this is a great example international partnership. Why is this important? 1. Coupang is the first private e-commerce company to partner with the U.S Department of Commerce, further opening SK's market to U.S businesses. 2. The partnership will help guide SMEs entering Korea's large e-commerce sector that is set to grow significantly in the next 5 years. 3. 🌟 𝑨 𝑯𝒆𝒂𝒓𝒕𝒇𝒆𝒍𝒕 𝑨𝒏𝒏𝒐𝒖𝒏𝒄𝒆𝒎𝒆𝒏𝒕: 𝑶𝒖𝒓 𝑱𝒐𝒖𝒓𝒏𝒆𝒚'𝒔 𝑬𝒏𝒅 𝑭𝒐𝒓 𝑵𝒐𝒘 🌟 Today, I am sharing a decision that has been both painful and therapeutic for us at Raijin.ai - AI Analysis Assistant. We are shutting down our product and pivoting away from our beloved user research AI agent. It has been a difficult few weeks and I wish we pivoted sooner, but on hindsight, here’s why it took so long: - 𝐖𝐞 𝐰𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐥𝐨𝐯𝐞 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐛𝐥𝐞𝐦 𝐰𝐞 𝐰𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐭𝐫𝐲𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐨 𝐬𝐨𝐥𝐯𝐞 Inspired by Y Combinator’s advice to build something that solves your own problem, we embarked on a mission to use LLMs to synthesize all the tons of user interviews we had done. However, we realized that the problem was not frequent enough and many user researchers / designers even preferred manually listening to the call recordings. The macroeconomic conditions leading to downsizing of product, design and research teams also shrank an already highly competitive market. But the most painful part of this is that our team still uses our own tool to do user research - which showed that there was indeed a problem to be solved here. - 𝐖𝐞 𝐰𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐮𝐧𝐬𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐛𝐥𝐞𝐦𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐬𝐨𝐥𝐯𝐞 𝐧𝐞𝐱𝐭 Despite early clues that this path might not work out for us, we found ourselves at a crossroads, unsure of what to pursue next. We already had some robust tech that we built and we were searching for problems. We explored various avenues, from a B2C version to a Slackbot, and even ventured into the LLM tooling space. Each attempt taught us valuable lessons, but none provided the strong buyer case we needed. As we close this chapter, I want to express my deepest gratitude to everyone who supported us along the way. Your encouragement and feedback have been invaluable. But this far from the end. Our team loves working together, and our goal to build products that customers love remains unchanged.
