The company plans to achieve this by increasing the number of new graduates and mid-career hires from universities in Asia and other regions. While some Japanese companies have started appointing foreign nationals to executive and managerial positions, Fast Retailing's goal stands out as particularly ambitious. To support its global business strategy, Fast Retailing will establish its main headquarters in both Japan and the United States. This move is aimed at strengthening its management team to oversee everything from store operations to development, procurement, and IT on a global scale. The need for executive talent extends beyond store operations into various fields, with the number of managerial positions reaching 2,144 as of the end of August 2023. Among them, the proportion of foreign nationals is already at 56%. The company also aims to increase the proportion of executive officers who are foreign nationals to 40% by around fiscal year 2030. To cultivate future managerial talent, Fast Retailing is expanding its collaborations with universities worldwide. It has already established partnerships with six universities in India and Vietnam, and has hired approximately 70 individuals, mainly IT professionals and those with MBA degrees. In an effort to improve retention rates, Fast Retailing offers detailed support to its employees. It has reintroduced an internal recruitment system, allowing eligible employees to apply for positions across countries and departments. This system is designed to provide employees with diverse experiences and develop them into future leaders. Furthermore, the company has improved its compensation packages to attract talent, including a maximum 40% increase in salaries in China in October 2023. In Japan, the starting salaries for new graduates have also been raised. Fast Retailing's Chairman and President, Tadashi Yanai, has stated that the company is willing to offer an annual salary of up to 1 billion yen to exceptional candidates. This emphasis on competitive compensation is aimed at attracting highly skilled professionals in IT, creative fields, and supply chain management. As Japanese companies continue to globalize, the trend of hiring foreign nationals for executive positions is on the rise. Hitachi, for example, has set a goal of increasing the proportion of foreign nationals in its executive ranks to 30% by fiscal year 2030. However, companies explicitly setting targets for the proportion of foreign nationals in their executive ranks remain relatively few.

As a startup, one big learning our company had recently is while many times we prepare for the worst, we should also prepare enough for the best situation. When we started developing this powerful AI solution (MedGen Japan) for Japanese doctors for them to find the relevant and trustable global medical content, we were highly conservative with our forecasts on Doctors’ response to an AI application given the low adoption of AI in Japan healthcare space. To our surprise, we received a massive positive response within 2 weeks of launch from Japanese doctors at least indicating, the problem we are solving is real and there is definitely a need for the solution to address it (be it AI or something else, doesn't really matter). We thought through several strategies on how do we handle the worst situation of low response, but didn't consider enough how do we handle the best situation wherein several users show up simultaneously to support us by registering, using the application more frequently and several nice enhancement feedback starts flowing in. It's a good learning to have, that while most of our strategies revolved around having plan B for the worst situation, it's definitely critical to have equally proportional strategies for the best situation. We are improving and getting better day-by-day in making the solution the way the Japanese doctors want. Google prefers not to call it a chatbot but an "AI assistant." Regardless of whether this terminology enlightens the audience, Haizhe Capital is more interested in the fact that the new version represents a clear breakthrough over competitors in terms of its capabilities for AI-driven travel planning. According to Google's Vice President and General Manager for Gemini experiences, Sissy Hsiao, Gemini Advanced integrates personalized travel recommendations with flight times, hotel locations, and dining preferences. For instance, if prompted with "a family trip to Miami over Labor Day weekend, with interests in art and seafood, and permission to import already booked flight and hotel details from Gmail," the AI can recommend attractions, hotels, and restaurants, along with arrival times. It might suggest dining at a specific seafood restaurant right after landing, rather than after hotel check-in. It estimates an hour for baggage claim and customs, and a 20 minutes drive from the airport to the restaurant, recommending a dinner time of 7:30 PM at a suitable nearby restaurant. For families with children, it suggests places like the Dallas Zoo and nearby ice cream shops, with additional options like the Dallas Arboretum and the Perot Museum of Nature and Science, each coupled with ice cream shop recommendations. If the start time changes, the AI also automatically adjusts the plan to recommend more suitable destinations. The AI Overviews feature is currently available only to users in the United States, with plans to expand to more countries soon. Haize Capital notes that while many chatbots in the travel sector, like those from Booking (NASDAQ: BKNG), Trip.com (NASDAQ: TCOM), and Expedia (NASDAQ: EXPE), have reached a certain level of maturity, they tend to focus more on guiding users to specific travel products. The advantage of Gemini Advanced lies in its integration of spatial products with time and travel itineraries, combining transportation options and time requirements for a more precise and flexible travel recommendation, a feature that OTAs currently struggle to match.

We often speak about programmable payments, be it for stablecoins, CBMTs (tokenized deposits), or sometimes even CBDCs, but what are concrete use cases for that? Panasonic, alongside SocioFuture, au Financial Holdings, TIS and DeCurret DCP, explored one use case through a recent project involving the Japanese CBMT initiative called "DCJPY". In March 2024, the consortium conducted a technical verification of a token-based tourism pass using DCJPY. Such tourism passes sometimes allow unlimited access to local transportation (trains and buses) and can also cover discounts to local activities, restaurants, and shops, all for a fixed fee. They are supposed to attract more tourists to specific areas or regions. Some Key Benefits and Challenges Addressed: ✅ Accurate Revenue Distribution: Automated allocation of revenue to transportation operators, activity providers, restaurants, and merchants based on actual usage, ensuring fair and timely payments. ✅ Simplified Administration: Reducing the burden of complex administrative tasks, enabling efficient and precise settlements between participating businesses. ✅ User Convenience and Transparency: Providing clear benefits and easy-to-understand usage terms for users, with automatic refunds of unused amounts as points that can be used for purchases within the area. ✅ Incentive Rewards: Enhancing referral programs by automatically providing rewards for users who promote the tourism pass. ✅ Enhanced Experience: Offering easy access to a variety of local attractions, dining, and shopping options, making the visit more enjoyable and hassle-free, while giving businesses the chance to promote themselves. The pilot confirmed the technical feasibility of using smart contracts on the DCJPY network to streamline and automate the processes involved in managing tourism passes. It also identified key areas for future development: 🔜 Next Steps: - Linking Passes to Digital IDs: Differentiating usage conditions for local residents and tourists. - Integrating NFTs: Creating unique, memorable experiences for users by recording travel achievements and providing collectible digital assets. - Further Exploration: The Local Currency Subcommittee plans to continue discussing and addressing additional challenges identified during the current verification project. This initiative demonstrates a concrete use case and shows the potential of programmable money and how it can improve economic ecosystems by enabling automatic, transparent, and efficient transactions on a programmable layer. TokyoDev has launched a new Japanese language blog! It is focused on aiding Japanese companies in building English-speaking engineering teams. This is our first step towards our goal of helping these companies internationalize their engineering departments, which will allow them to take advantage of a much larger pool of eager applicants who have specialized knowledge or experience that they have trouble hiring for domestically. So far, we have had a lot of success helping Japanese companies hire international software engineers. Those companies already had international engineering teams in place, though, so we’ve been augmenting what was already there. Now, we are thrilled to provide resources in Japanese, relevant to companies interested in developing new global teams. In addition to the blog articles, Sayana Takagi will help support companies looking to make this transition. She’s been assisting companies in hiring international engineers for five years, and so has firsthand insight into the challenges and benefits. I’ve been working with her for almost a year now, and am thankful to her for helping make this possible. If your company is interested in her services, please reach out to her. Helping Japanese companies become more international will directly aid our existing audience by growing the job pool for international software engineers, who are perhaps more fluent in languages like C, Python, or Ruby than they are in Japanese. As a dad, reading about the challenges working moms face in balancing work and life hits close to home. A recent survey by yes123 Job Bank revealed that a staggering 94% of working moms feel they can't juggle both family and career, with 70% finding the workplace unfriendly. It's no wonder that 85.4% have considered becoming full-time moms. The survey also delved into the salary expectations of full-time moms if their role was considered a job. Results varied, but the average hovered around NT$51,156 per month, akin to a mid-level managerial position. What's even more concerning is that 70% of respondents feel that Taiwan's workplace environment is unsupportive towards working moms. Many have faced unequal treatment and career setbacks due to their motherhood status, with 93.4% considering changing jobs because of it. It's crucial for us as a society to support working moms better, both at home and in the workplace.
