🚨 No one is hiring junior devs. 🚨 Tons of software work needs to be done, but no one is hiring junior devs. Amplifi Staffing has had 0 requests over the past 4 years for junior devs. I get it. When you are going to a staffing agency, you’re thinking shorter term (even though it usually isn’t when you find the right person). You need someone that can hit the ground running. Same thing when you’re a startup. You need people that can rock and roll on day 1. Same thing when you’re a multinational whose core business isn’t software products. Same thing when you’re a midsize company. Same thing when you’re scaling. Same thing when your team starts using AI to develop and the most important skill is architectural thinking, not writing code. It's always the same thing. There is so much work to be done, but everyone is fighting over the same mid-senior people. What’s going to happen to our industry when there are no junior devs with the proper experience to take their place? We have no choice but to change our education pipeline for devs so they can create value as juniors, or we’re going to have a serious problem. I don’t know what the solution looks like yet, but we better figure it out.

Bootcamps that cost $10,000 do NOT get you Tech Sales Roles. They might even be hurting your chances. Recruiters aren’t looking at your degrees or certificates or even references. Tech jobs market? Crazy year, and it seems you get a different opinion on the jobs market in Tech depending on who you speak with. Still a lot of pain out there for sure but Software Engineers we have been speaking with in the last few weeks have noticed an increase in messages and interview requests (These all have been Senior though), however processes are taking a while. Also been having chats with my Talent Acquisition contacts who are in the midst of their 2025 headcount planning and they tell me there is more activity planned for next year than this. But words like "scaling" and "high volume" have not been part of the conversation. How does everyone else see it right now? #SoftwareEngineering #TechJobs #Ventellect

I've hired hundreds of devs in my career - I still sit on dev interviews today. The easiest way to bag that £100K+ job is to improve your "coachability". Coachability means being able to "take it". Take the feedback from your team, you might think your code is the best, but it probably isn't, you might think you nailed what the customer wants, but you probably didn't. See great devs work with everyone, they iterate ideas, they stay approachable, they consider new ways, they listen....they are coachable. When you are coachable, people work with you more, you work on bigger projects, you do better stuff, and you bag that £100K+ job. #developer #coding #startups #dev #fullstack

Before I left my last position, I was talking with my team about our accomplishments and I will never forget that a senior dev said that my greatest accomplishment was not renewing one of our contractors. This contractor was problematic. They didn’t communicate well, their code was sloppy and overly complicated, their tickets were always late with poor explanations about the causes, they ignored suggestions or direction, they never reached out for help, they missed meetings. After the contractor was let go, we ended up finding a large feature that they had left behind that the product team thought was complete, but had never been merged or deployed. We were put on a clock to get that feature out and one of the other devs had to fix the code in a time crunch to get it merged in time to make the release. I don’t know how this contractor was able to stay on for so long before me with terrible output and no signs of improvement or desire to improve. After all of the work I had put in to improve consistency and communication across the front end developers, it was a huge shock to hear that the most important thing I did over my time was to terminate this contractor. As a servant leader, often the most important thing to do is clear blockers and impediments and improve the developer quality of life. This contractor was hurting morale and pulling too many other resources off their own tickets for multiple PR reviews. A burden was lifted even though we were down a developer. Metrics on the reliability of our ticket deliveries immediately improved. Was it my greatest accomplishment? I hope not, but it was a case study for me of addition by subtraction and the power of positive team morale. #softwareengineering #management #servantleadership

Update time! It’s been a couple of months since the Spring 2024 Ignite Bootcampers wrapped our formal meetings together. Here’s what’s been going on: Successfully Landed First Industry Role: "This is your reminder (and let's be real, reminder to myself) to keep at it." Feeling Ready to Tackle the Challenges: "I owe a lot of this confidence boost to the self-reflection exercises we did in our bootcamp. Also, having my cohort members point out my strengths has been really valuable too." Screw This I’m Doing It Myself: “The bootcamp helped me to reconnect with what matters most to me, and to be bold and brave enough to cofound my own start-up to transform youth mental healthcare.” The possibilities are endless. But seriously, I kind of hate slack 🤷‍♂️ I wake up bleary-eyed and pick up my phone… bunch of notifications. I start reading. I like to read, but I want to read a fair number of entries and then reply as I’m waking up more and the coffee is working. Except.. WHICH CHANNEL was that in? Sigh. I forgot to mark it, so 😡 as I wander the countless channels, trying to figure where to reply. For slack to be better - most formatting options need removed - because beautifully composed messages with nested bullets are NOT an instant message. Also - remove the ability to edit messages. You type and hit send, you own it yo… Now, because people can change their messages later, delete them from threads… now we have people taking screenshots of slack dialogs and… sending them in slack 🤦‍♂️😢 Email suffers none of these flaws. #meatbasedengineer

Should DevRel professionals be paid more than software engineers? 🤔 Stacking unique combinations of skills is a winning play. In a global market I think it's more important than ever. That's why companies serve increasingly niche markets. It's incredibly difficult to compete against the entire world. Niching down reduces the market size, but also narrows the field of competition. How many people are good at software engineering? How many people are good at marketing? Now how many people are good at both software engineering AND marketing? An exponentially smaller number. I'm good at recruiting, marketing, sales and operations. That affords me far more optionality than I had when I was only good at recruiting. I see a surge of posts on LinkedIn along the following lines: "I am a better software developer than anyone I know. However, despite this, I keep getting fired (or nobody wants to hire me)." Well, the inconvenient truth is that, if you keep getting fired (or if you are struggling to get hired), you should consider that you may not be as good as you think you are. I am not trying to disparage you. The data in your environment shows that you may be wrong. However, thinking that you are already better than everyone else prevents you from growing to the level where you become attractive to employers or consulting clients. After all, how can you learn anything if you believe that nobody has anything worthy to teach? This is the opposite of impostor syndrome, but it's much worse. While impostor syndrome is unpleasant, it actually motivates people to keep learning. The superiority complex, on the other hand, stops any learning in its tracks. P.S. If you comment on any of my posts with thinly veiled insults and your profile is a combination of you saying how you are better than everyone else and complaints about how you never got any reply back despite sending out 500 resumes, I will not bother engaging in any debates with you. I will block you right away.

How I would prepare for interviews if I was a Software Engineer interviewing for a new role: - Don’t be afraid for ask for preparation or what to expect! If you have applied via an agency or internal recruiter they will normally be able to advise and give some tips on the process - Utilize AI! Put the job description in and ask what questions you could expect to find at interview for the role and have a think about how you would answer, and what examples you can use to support your answers - Use AI to learn more about the company, looking on their website and into their background is only surface level, you can ask the likes of ChatGPT for who their competitors are and make comparisons, as well as dive deeper - Make sure to have some projects that are OpenSource, and practice explaining these to people who aren’t technical as well as are technical, ensuring you can demonstrate working in cross-collaborative teams - Be inquisitive! Especially when interviewing for start-ups, ask what would be expected of you in the first 1,3,6 and 12 months in post, as well as what their runway looks like and what numbers they are currrently posting and so on Have I missed any?
