Jensen Huang (Cofounder & CEO of NVIDIA) has 60 direct reports and does not do 1-on-1s. The more I learn about Jensen, two things become clear, he does not care about conventional 'best practices' or ways of working and he does bold things that seem crazy to others: "The reason is because the layer of hierarchy in your company really matters. If the CEO's direct staff is 60 people, the number of layers you've removed in a company is probably something like 7. I don't do 1-on-1s and almost everything that I say, I say to everybody at the same time... ...I love that everybody is working off the same song sheet. I love that there is no privileged access to information. I believe that when you give everybody equal access to information, it empowers people... ...I give you feedback right there in front of everybody. Feedback is learning. For what reason are you the only person who should learn this? Learning from mistakes, other people's mistakes, is the best way to learn."

I have been stressing this lately - Business plans and pitch decks are just tools for guiding strategy and communicating vision. In fact, startups deviate a lot from their early business plans. How do you secure investments then? At early stages, the team gets funded, not the startup. Investors look for specific qualities in the founding team. Some qualities that matter: > Background and Expertise: Proven track records and relevant experience are crucial. Nvidia is making significant inroads into Southeast Asia, with a keen focus on Vietnam. CEO Jensen Huang has spearheaded the establishment of an R&D center there and the acquisition of VinBrain. Additionally, Nvidia is forging partnerships with local giants like FPT for smart cloud solutions and Viettel for cybersecurity initiatives. This expansion contrasts sharply with Huang's earlier, more casual visit to Indonesia, where he was spotted enjoying local cuisine alongside the CEO of Indosat. Such visits by tech moguls like Elon Musk and Tim Cook often appear as mere charm offensives, lacking in substantial economic commitments. Curiously, Nvidia, like other global tech firms, seems to sidestep Indonesia in favor of countries like Vietnam or Malaysia for investment. Indonesia even had to leverage regulatory pressure to entice Apple into committing to a USD 1 billion manufacturing plant to lift a ban on iPhone 16 sales in the country. It's akin to a forced marriage really. The underlying reasons for this trend were illuminated during my discussion with an Indonesian trade ministry official recently. He mulled that in Vietnam, foreign companies quickly engage in setting up research facilities or buying local businesses without the drawn-out negotiations, making Vietnam an appealing hub for tech R&D. I explained that there isn’t a secret formula. Similar to Indonesia during the New Order era, Vietnam has relied on low wages to attract foreign investment while requiring technology transfers. The idea was to learn and eventually replicate these technologies to produce competitive local products. This is also the strategy which enabled Chinese manufacturers to become global competitors after producing for companies like Tesla. Today, Chinese EVs are outperforming their European counterparts and Tesla itself. However, Vietnam offers additional advantages. Its bureaucratic processes are streamlined, with regulations that are clear, predictable, and business-friendly. Discussions with Vietnamese officials are straightforward and focused on business outcomes, avoiding unnecessary formalities or distractions. In contrast, Indonesia presents significant challenges. While the Job Creation Law was intended to improve the investment climate, it has had the opposite effect, leading to declining foreign direct investment (FDI), manufacturing indices, and rising unemployment. A lack of legal certainty, where policies are frequently implemented and retracted, further deters investors. Additionally, local businessmen often exploit law enforcement to force an established companies to sell it shares or projects below market value on pain of criminalization—an act that goes beyond hostile takeovers and borders on daylight robbery. A Demanding, Perfectionist with a Singular Clear Vision - that is absolutely what you want from a leader or coach if you value doing great things. Great things are hard and staying focused on that singular clear vision is critical, and a leader keeping you focused can feel like/is a demanding perfectionist. It's easy to paint "Demanding, Perfectionist" as a negative traits, but it's what you want pushing you and others if you want to do great things. My first experience of this was our rowing coach for the University of Washington. UW Rowing is a world class program with shelves full of National titles and Olympic medal teams and athletes. Our UW rowing freshman coach was Bob Ernst - his job was to be demanding and drive perfection into all aspects of what we did. He had (has) an amazing balance of driving you, challenging you and leading you... and rowing hurts.. a lot... his job was to train us to bury pain deeper and deeper and push through to go harder, faster. Each time we were sure we were heading to the Boat house after a long and tough practice, thinking we were done... and he would say "turn em around lets go back out!" .. I hated it... but loved what it did for me and us as a team... we went Undefeated.... He was my first demanding perfectionist leader... . I would have done anything for coach Bob and the lessons i learned are core to who i am ... the journey was tough, we needed his focused demanding perfectionism to drive us and success. Since those days, if you've worked with me you've been frustrated by my demanding approach to push you beyond the obvious approach and force the interesting and unique approach, as that is what it takes to break out of the noise. Yet we have had great cultures with amazing people and we all grew together personally ... as well as the 10 companies growing into success and exits! The July 25th Open-Source LLaMA 3.1 release deserves attention, especially to the investors of close source LLM models. 3 model sizes of 8B, 70B and 405B parameters enables edge to datacenter usage. Expanded context windows to 128k tokens supports much large prompt and multilingual support. The 405B parameter model competes well with GPT-4 and Claude 3.5 and is integrated with various cloud platforms. The LLaMA model can be fine-tuned and adapted for specific tasks without full retraining with techniques like LoRA as full retraining requires 2048 A100 GPUs for 21 days (estimate). The hardware costs alone for the training could reach tens of millions of dollars (painful to VCs) so efficient alternatives to full retraining is key to AI startups leveraging LLaMA. The approaches are growing, but include LoRA, 8-bit precision to reduce memory footprint and fine-tuning on specific datasets or tasks. Why did Meta open-source LLaMA? Meta aims to disrupt the competitive edge of companies with proprietary models such as Google and OpenAI. The traditional open-sourcing benefits of building a large developer base, fostering innovation and adoption. It also helps Meta attract and retain top AI researchers who prefer working with open and accessible technologies. Likely, Meta will offer managed services with specialized hardware in the future.

Losing US$157 billion (INR12 lakh crores)! Imagine investing INR1 in a company, which becomes ~10x and you continue to hold it. Due to market conditions and the company's performance, the value of your investment decreases from ~10x to 4.5x and you sell off entirely, making some handsome gains. Fast forward 5 years, the market dynamics enable the stock price to shoot up, giving a notional value exceeding INR225+ - a simplified calculation. This is exactly what happened with Masayoshi Son, the visionary founder of the SoftBank Group, when in 2019 he sold his 5% holding in Nvidia for US$3.3 billion. Today, those shares would have been worth US$160 billion (50x the sale price). During his recent annual shareholder meeting, he described the incident as “I had to tearfully sell the shares”, "frustrating to remember the ones I missed”, and “The fish that got away was big.” Indeed, timing the market is nearly impossible.
