Talk about the power of AI and how it is about to be fully autonomous. Google's Assistant is shown in the YouTube video below, "Google Duplex: A.I. Assistant Calls Local Businesses To Make Appointments," calling local businesses on its own to set up appointments. The goal of this AI service is to assist users by taking care of chores like making an appointment for a haircut, an oil change, or a plumbing call. Google Duplex solves this problem by making smooth calls in the background, something that many small businesses in the US lack. In a real-world example, the assistant makes a haircut appointment over the phone and grasps and navigates the conversation. Another instance shows the assistant's ability to gracefully handle subtle interactions and unexpected responses by securing a table at a small restaurant. And patience is paying off—deeptech-focused funds are pulling in an average net IRR of 16%, well above traditional tech’s 10%. The takeaway? Cash out early, and you’re probably leaving money on the table. Sequoia’s “evergreen fund” model could become the standard for deeptech. Deeptech isn’t for the impatient; it’s for those who understand that real value compounds over time. 📊 4. The Valuation Puzzle Deal values for AI and ML in Europe are holding steady, but the honeymoon phase is cooling off for some sectors. Semiconductor valuations are finally re-aligning after 2023’s overblown peaks. Meanwhile, frontier labs like Anthropic and Cohere are still pushing sky-high revenue multiples, some over 30x ARR. Europe’s climate and healthtech markets remain in the spotlight, but the days of sky-high rounds may be on the decline. #️⃣ 5. However, the document also unveils important clues about the potential for end-to-end neural net training of humanoid robots, reminiscent of Tesla's approach to training its vehicles with FSD. Ong and Walter explore the concept of personalized humanoid skills. Imagine purchasing a bot with built-in capabilities, then having the option to augment and customize those skills through a "Skills Store" akin to Apple's App Store. This opens up a world of possibilities for tailoring robots to specific tasks and preferences. The discussion also touches on the potential for various robot form factors, each designed to excel at particular skills. Picture a tennis-playing robot that comes pre-trained with basic volleying instructions, but requires a "Skills Upgrade" to perform at a master level. Here's an interesting bit of research to keep in your thoughts: According to IEEE Spectrum, the very same Large Language Model (#LLM) that power generative AI platforms such as #ChatGPT and others are actually capable of passing, even outperforming humans in Theory of Mind tests. Before you panic, this doesn't necessarily mean that LLMs actually do possess theory of mind or self consciousness -- but it does pique interest in theoretical purposes and exercises. In reality, while LLMs are scoring well, there is no real method for how to test for the existence of theory of mind -- so again, #AI here is just doing what it does best: #synthesis of data from many different datasets. What this does mean is that AI systems can better mimic and understand human psyche and anticipate what they need, not necesarily that it can make decisions or form thoughts in itself. Is Nvidia a GPU company? Yes. But it is not just a GPU company. It is also generating revenue from memory and networking and interconnects and so much more. Among the AI wars taking place right now (e.g. GPU rich v poor, Data quality), a war over margins is one of them. Daniel Gross compared NVIDIA's healthy 85%+ margins to a 'kind of interchange rate for tokens', and that all layers of the AI stack are incentivised to invest and architect their infrastructure to lower their interchange rate. One of the key incentives at work is to commoditise the cost of complements. This has been the impetus for PyTorch, TensorFlow, Android and now Llama for Meta. We can see this at work in high resolution with Snowflake launching Arctic and Databricks launching DBRX. As Apoorv A. wrote in his excellent piece last week, at this point in time value has disproportionately accrued to Semis and Infra, but if mobile and cloud are any indication then this will invert eventually and margins will expand for applications closest to the end consumers. They'll be helped by Wright's law, which is driving down the cost of every generation of frontier models within months of its release. The cutting edge will remain the province of a handful of companies, but the capabilities are diffusing at unprecedented rates. Application builders can unlock 10x better experiences at diluted margins by leveraging expensive SOTA models, before graduating to higher margins as inference costs inevitably collapse. We're still in the early innings, but the incentive to commoditise complements and the margin wars at large will continue to develop.
