I was recently asked why I like Service Design, which made me think about this more. I want to share my thoughts. I enjoy exploring intricate systems, analyzing and synthesizing the information gathered, and utilizing that knowledge to address pain points and enhance positive experiences. Service Design is a discipline that focuses on designing for humans by conducting qualitative and quantitative research through direct interaction with people. This personal contact with individuals is appealing to me. Service Design involves dealing with multifaceted challenges and issues that require various research methods to solve them. Personally, I find it rewarding to work on projects that blend logic and facts with human instincts, reactions, and opinions. The interplay of these two elements is something I enjoy and find stimulating.

"The strategic design gold rush is over." While this might sound like a scary sentiment at first, I'm choosing to see it as an opportunity for design leadership. It's a chance for reinvention of what role design led teams can play in corporate settings. Users are increasing their demand for simple and straightforward user experiences. Every company continues to need more user and customer advocacy and design leaders are perfectly positioned to be the fabric of that advocacy and stitch together the functions required to deliver it to market. Rather than being relegated to a subordinate capability in product-led companies, design leaders can now redefine their purpose, leveraging their skills in user empathy, strategic experiential planning and continue to tie together the often disparate agendas at play in organizations. #Design #Leadership #Reinvention #Innovation

WOW This Fundamentals in UX Design course from the UX Design Institute is amazing. I just burst into the living room declaring to my husband PEOPLE DON'T BUY TECHNOLOGY, THEY BUY SOLUTIONS TO PROBLEMS! Then I looked at the remote control with scorn WHY DOES IT HAVE SO MANY BUTTONS?! 80% of users only use 20% of the features. Don't they know that features are a trade-off for usability? Designers need to be an integral part of the process from start to finish, advocating for the user and working with engineering team every step of the way so they make products people actually WANT and LIKE! Okay, rant over. I will get back to my course now... #uxdesign

🌟 Empowering Vietnamese Workers with Gender Inclusive Financial Solutions: Key Takeaways from the #BrightFuturesReport 🌟 Last night, at #FinclusionWeek I had the privilege to share insights from the Bright Futures program —a transformative financial literacy initiative for garment workers in Vietnam. Here are the key points: 💡 The Challenge: Many factory workers, especially women, face financial instability, compounded by limited access to formal banking and the pressures of societal expectations. The COVID-19 pandemic made this even harder, pushing many into cycles of debt. 🔑 The Solution: Bright Futures addresses these issues with a human-centered design approach, empowering workers through peer-led financial education. The program focuses on building financial resilience by aligning workers with their “money personalities” to foster better financial habits and planning. 👷‍♀️ Program Highlights: Via #HumanCenteredDesign ways of learning & collaborating, over 2,000 garment workers participated in the pilot to date, enhancing their financial literacy through interactive, peer-driven learning. The program has had a ripple effect—workers are sharing their knowledge with their families, creating a culture of financial awareness and change in behaviors. It tackles issues like reliance on predatory lending, financial communication taboos, and the need for accessible financial tools for better 'family-centric' financial planning and management. 🎯 Looking Ahead: This initiative is not just about education—it’s about creating long-term change for good. We aim to scale the program to empower more workers in Vietnam, and who knows, across Southeast Asia, ensuring that financial literacy becomes the key to their economic resilience. For an organization committed to the practice of user experience design, the Interaction Design Foundation doesn’t seem to value their own ideology. I’ve been a member for years and recently served as a local leader (of which I resigned a year ago and they have yet to remove me from the role). I’m finding their billing processes to be on the verge of questionable UX practices: ·     My membership increased 31% with no notification before billing. I was told that a single notification had been sent a year ago buried in an email with a subject line of “We have updated our Terms of Use, Privacy Policy, and Pricing Structure.” Do they not realize that subject lines such as this are white noise in people’s inboxes and begs to be deleted without reading? ·     To prevent the upcoming charge, the user must contact the main office and have them remove the store payment details. There is no ability for the user to do this themselves. ·     There is also no option to opt out of recurring charges. This is akin the dark practice of subscription services that lure users with trial period in hopes the user will forget to cancel before the period expires.   ·     The user can cancel their membership. However, the user loses access to all materials, content, and account details even though the user has prepaid for the upcoming year. This entices the user to delay cancelling only to encounter the same pain points the following year. ·     User is sent an invoice AFTER the charge has been applied. No notification of upcoming billings. ·     When asked to refund the membership charge, the admin basically responded with “The reason we’re unable to offer a refund guarantee on the renewal of memberships is that we already have a money-back guarantee after sign-up . . . we’d have to charge higher prices if we offered unlimited refunds and that’s why we make our policies crystal-clear, doing everything in our power to ensure members understand our fair terms.” This statement basically has the overtone of: It’s not that our communication and user experience is insufficient, it’s the user’s fault. IDF needs to reassess their membership and billing practices if they want to maintain any integrity in the field. As a hiring manager, I do not look at organizational memberships as having any influence in hiring decisions.  My advice for those wanting to increase their knowledge and break into design, rather than pay a yearly $264 membership fee, there are many free resources, podcasts, and articles that will help you achieve the same results. This got me thinking. I hear a lot of leaders say they're looking for cultural transformation, and want to shift in a direction that values reactivity, challenge confrontation, and collaboration. What they're describing is a design-driven culture. Many of these attributes are vital when UX is at the center. If that resonates, then looking at design maturity is the better route. #DesignMaturity #DesignDriven #Culture
