For the past few years, I’ve been building something deeply meaningful to me—a community exclusively for Black creatives, entrepreneurs, and professionals who lead with purpose, action, and vision. A safe space where our ambitions can breathe freely, where we are no longer bound by the need for validation from those who have historically held the power. I’ve always believed that building our own networks is not only essential but transformative. We need to create the opportunities, collaborations, and partnerships we’ve long waited for others to provide, and in doing so, we establish our own tables, grow our own capital, and forge our own paths. Recent weeks have reminded us, yet again, that no matter our contributions or achievements, society still has a long way to go in appreciating the value of Black people, our ability to lead, and particularly the strength and vision of Black women. Time and time again, Black women have shown up, leading movements, advancing culture, and redefining industries, yet the recognition and respect we deserve continue to lag. But here’s the truth: we have everything we need within our own community. By pooling our resources and connections, we can create a powerful, self-sustaining network. That’s what M.A.D.E. Community is all about—a collective force where we uplift, invest in, and champion each other. And in 2025, we’re coming back stronger than ever with a full slate of programs and events. Our goal? I’m SO excited to host Network While Black’s second event BLOOM: Separting Your Career From Your Identity on May 14th in NYC. Our inaugural event Network With Intention, was held in January. We brought so many amazing WOC (some men) together, and networked with people from all different fields. Bloom will be a little different. Although we are still emphasizing networking, on May 14th we will be discussing the importance of separating your career from your identity. This topic is very dear to me because as a Stylist in an unsure job market I’ve had to constantly ask myself what am I doing if I’m not working? I didn’t realize that because I’ve spent so much of my 20s chasing my career, that I didn’t know who I was when I wasn’t on set. This past year has been a whirlwind of emotions. Having a slow season in the industry forced me to think of myself as more than just a Stylist, and explore other interests of mine. Network While Black has been an amazinggggg venture for me, and I’m so thankful for this downtime because I was able to BLOOM. I now understand I am not my job, I am not my salary, and I am not just another Stylist. With that being said, be on the lookout for event details!!! ABFE. A Philanthropic Partnership for Black Communities's Harambee conference has recharged my soul. In these political times, it's a powerful and healing experience to be surrounded by over 300 colleagues who are advocating for change in their communities and institutions. 🌟 A pro-tip as conference season is in full swing: If you're an introvert like me, give yourself permission to play to your strengths. Be strategic about the workshops you attend and save your energy for the type of networking where you shine. Chances are, you're more relaxed and more impressive in 1:1 conversations and small groups. Collect contact information and make dates for 1:1 conversations after the conference. Rest, hydrate, build meaningful connections, and repeat.

Today, I am proud to announce the official launch of the Black Women’s Institute for Health (BWIH)—an idea that has been a germ of a dream for many years. This journey has been both challenging and inspiring, and I am incredibly grateful for the support of so many people who have helped make this a reality. Your encouragement, wisdom, and belief in this vision have pulled everything together, and I couldn’t be more thankful for the collective effort. At BWIH, our mission is simple but urgent: to advocate for the health and survival of Black women and girls across Canada. We know that Black women face unique and significant disparities within the healthcare system and adjacent systems, and it’s time for those experiences to be fully recognized and addressed. As part of our launch, we are unveiling a groundbreaking initiative: VOICES UNHEARD: Canada’s First Vital Signs Survey for Black Women and Girls. This survey marks the first comprehensive effort to collect data on Black women’s health outcomes in Canada. For too long, the lack of race-based data has left us invisible within the healthcare system, with devastating effects on our physical, mental, and emotional well-being. This survey is a vital step toward changing that narrative and creating the foundation for policy and legislative change. We are asking for your support—whether you identify as a Black woman or not. Please share the survey link within your networks and encourage Black women and girls (aged 16 and up) to participate. The more voices we gather, the stronger our case for change. On this day, last week I was invited just my friend Ifat Pridan owner of Lili The First, an exquisite boutique located in Georgetown - Washington, DC to hold an intimate discussion and sound bath. Though I typically hold and host these spaces as a facilitator of social justice spaces, it was so refreshing to be in conversation with people who I was meeting for the first time in a completely different context. Through mindfulness and embodiment practices, we were able to access our presence and vulnerability. It was an evening of being in discussion about the following: 1. Practicing presence with our goals and desires. 2. Recognizing where we need more clarity and strengthening to access our goals and desires. 3. Sharing tools to navigate challenges that exist and what is beyond our control. It was a beautiful and heart opening evening. I believe we need more spaces where we can trust that it is curated with care to support building community through intimacy. Intimacy is the value that I lead with in my life and work. It allows me to be transformed in service of the work of myself and what that work offers to the world. I am so grateful to Ifat for her opening the door for me to share the parts of myself as a human, coach and consultant that feeds my most potent offerings and wildest dreams. 🚨 LET’S TALK ABOUT FOOD, HEALTH, AND THE DANGER OF DISCONNECTION. 🚨 Food-Is-Medicine companies are gaining attention for tackling health disparities in Black communities, in an industry that’s poised to hit a $50 billion market cap in the next 10-12 years. They promise solutions, tout innovation, and use Black data points—Black health stats, Black anecdotal evidence, Black stories—to secure capital, contracts, and investment. But here’s the question: What happens when they create $0 opportunities for Black executives, directors, or decision-makers? 📊 THE FACTS: • Black communities face some of the highest rates of chronic illnesses like diabetes and hypertension—illnesses deeply tied to food access and quality. • Despite this, only 1.4% of Black founders secure venture capital funding. • And even worse? Black representation in executive roles within industries profiting off that health data is shockingly low. So, what does it mean when companies profit from “solving” our problems while shutting us out of the solutions? 💭 It’s extractive. They mine our pain for profit while denying us a seat at the table. 💭 It’s short-sighted. True change comes from empowering communities, not exploiting them. 💭 It’s dangerous. Without Black voices in leadership, these “solutions” will never address the root causes of health disparities—they’ll simply perpetuate them. We can do better. We MUST do better. If companies are serious about addressing health inequities in Black communities, they need to: 1️⃣ Invest in Black leadership. Representation at the executive and board levels is non-negotiable. 2️⃣ Redirect resources into the community. From job creation to local partnerships, the impact must be tangible. 3️⃣ Engage Black voices authentically. We are not just data points—we’re the experts of our own experiences. 🗣️ Let’s have the conversation: • What does equity look like in Food-Is-Medicine? • How do we hold these companies accountable? • And how do we ensure our data fuels our opportunities, not just their bottom line? Last night, I spent some time with Muslim leaders around the country at a gathering hosted by the Muslim Civic Coalition. We talked about post-election reporting, messaging, and stakeholder engagement. The organizers and leaders I met have been working relentlessly to ensure Muslim Americans use their voices this election. Many questions arose around how to frame a "win" when candidates of both parties have caused incredible harm to our community. Leaders also had practical questions about communicating with various stakeholders and the appropriate timing of post-election briefings and products. Here are a few takeaways everyone could benefit from: 1. Think about the questions you're getting from your stakeholders that you feel ill-equipped to answer. Don't ignore this. What do you need to be able to offer a compelling response? Are there things you can't know? Then say that, but point to what's certain now and what's next. 2. Map out your stakeholders. These groups are typically some combination of funders (don't wait for the grant report deadline), volunteers or community members who are already connected with you, community members who care about your work but might not know you yet, coalition partners, and community leaders. 3. Don't wait too long to communicate. Stakeholders will be looking for answers. Tell your story on your own terms, rooted in the long-term goals of your organization and cause. (I've included a suggested communication timeline below) 4. Repurpose content as much as you can and keep things tight. This is especially important for small teams or startups. The fact that you ARE communicating and being responsive is what's most important. I can't understate the difficulty of this election season for Muslim Americans. So much is at stake for our community, for other marginalized people, and for our loved ones around the world. Despite the difficulties, we've also found new allies, grown our civic infrastructure by leaps and bounds, and seen a new generation of bold leadership emerge, ready to keep fighting no matter who's in charge. This is democracy. This is the struggle.
