When rates head back down, which is inevitable (US needs to refi mountains of debt, middle class and lower consumers showing stress, resi RE market coming off (even in FL)) + alts funds (PE, equities HFs, direct investments into CRE, etc) generating lower IRRs = need to find alpha to get your 7.75%. While crypto no doubt more volatile, it can provide massive alpha, esp when liquidity tap turned on. Some HNWs and family offices know this and allocate sub 5% of book to crypto. But still very small number doing this. And very few pension funds and endowments have any liquid crypto exposure. Given the fact crypto is not "going away", would think allocators need to start getting up to speed and consider tip toeing into liquid digital assets. Fascinating that Lightspeed is applying to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission to become an RIA so that it can use 20%+ of its funds to trade secondaries. This move is clearly opportunistic, but what does it mean for the broader VC market? One thing is for certain, Lightspeed is seeing more opportunity in the secondary market than the primary market. Additionally, 19 other funds have also recently made this transition.
