🚍 Congratulations to the team at #PittsburghRegionalTransit (PRT) on fully staffing its route schedule for the first time since before the pandemic! I took away three effective strategies that could help other agencies: 1. Increase Training Capacity: PRT ramped up its number of trainers from 24 to 32. This allowed them to run multiple shifts of on-the-street training for new operators, ensuring a steady pipeline of qualified drivers. Training expansion is key to meeting demand. 2. Offer Attractive Incentives: By offering signing bonuses (like $1,000 for those with CDL licenses) and bonuses for employee referrals, PRT showed that a combination of financial incentives and perks can make a huge difference in attracting qualified talent. 3. Collaborate with Unions: PRT & ATU worked together to increase wages and allow new drivers to have sick leave during their first year of work. This partnership helped improve both retention and recruitment efforts, proving that collaboration between management and unions is essential. The Office of the U.S. Trade Representative, Small Business Administration, and Department of Commerce Convene the Third USMCA Small and Medium-Sized Enterprise Dialogue Senior officials from the United States, Mexico, and Canada convened the third United States-Mexico-Canada (USMCA) Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises (SME) Dialogue in Montreal. Key participants included Cara Morrow from the U.S. Trade Representative office, Mexico's Under Secretary of Foreign Trade Alejandro Encinas, and Canada's Deputy Minister for International Trade Rob Stewart, along with Daniel Krupnick from the U.S. Small Business Administration and SME representatives from the three countries. Dialogue Details: The SME Dialogue, an initiative under the USMCA SME Chapter, is organized by various U.S. and Canadian governmental bodies and Mexico's Ministry of Economy. Previous dialogues were held in San Antonio, Texas (2022), and Mexico City (2023). This year's discussions focused on several critical areas for SMEs, including: ➡ Integration into value chains ➡ Inclusive trade ➡ Customs and regulatory procedures ➡ Intellectual property rights protection ➡ Access to financing and government resources ➡ E-commerce Trade and Economic Impact: Mexico and Canada are the primary export destinations for U.S. SMEs. In 2023, trade among the USMCA countries exceeded $1.8 trillion, predominantly involving small businesses. In 2022, over 90,000 U.S. SMEs exported $83 billion worth of goods to Canada, while over 49,000 U.S. SMEs exported $110 billion to Mexico.
