Today’s USMTO report from AMT - The Association For Manufacturing Technology shows that manufacturing technology orders totaled $360.8 million in August 2024. This marks a 22.7% increase from July, though still is lower than August 2023. Despite the decline compared to last year, the industry continues to operate above historic levels, underscoring sustained demand for manufacturing capacity. Year-to-date orders stand at $2.81 billion, reflecting an 11.5% decline from the same period in 2023, yet with a positive outlook for the remainder of the year. The surge in orders from contract machine shops and aerospace manufacturers signals growing confidence and an expectation of continued production growth. What’s Next? As we move into the final months of 2024, we expect momentum to build, driven by rising capacity utilization, industry optimism, and potential rate cuts. 🚀 Insights from OpExChange: Transforming Workers’ Compensation with Lean and Technology 🚀 Last week, the OpExChange hosted a compelling virtual discussion featuring Jesse Dantice of Zenjuries and Tim Hayden from Sargent Metal Fabricators. Nearly 100 OpExChange members joined us for this eye-opening session on tackling the often-excessive costs associated with workers' compensation. Tim Hayden highlighted a critical issue: the current workers’ compensation system is “broken.” However, he shared how Sargent Metal Fabricators has successfully addressed this challenge with the Zenjuries application. What’s remarkable is how Zenjuries applied a lean approach to resolve the issue—eliminating waste, cutting claim cycle times, and ultimately reducing premium costs. Jesse and Tim emphasized that manufacturers should leverage their lean mindset to identify and eliminate inefficiencies. By incorporating technology and automation, companies can further accelerate these improvements. Cutting tool consumption is a leading indicator of manufacturing activity. Check out AMT - The Association For Manufacturing Technology's Christopher Chidzik and his insights on the April 2024 shipments of cutting tools, measured by the Cutting Tool Market Report compiled in a collaboration between AMT and the United States Cutting Tool Institute (USCTI) Orders are up 5% above the same period in 2023. Costikyan Jarvis, president of Jarvis Cutting Tools says, “The industrial sector of the economy continues to move sideways. While the value of cutting tool shipments is up about 5% over last year, the flatter growth rate in units shows that inflationary pressures are still present. What are you seeing?
