On 26th we had our first #build2learn session at Saama. Tamil Arasan Ph.D. and team were really helpful and took care of everything for making sure the event went well. I wanted to share, in a series of posts the stories that are cooking at Build2Learn. Allow me to take you through just how much can be done in 3 hours. MicroProduct #1 Where the sun at? An app to help people decide which side of the bus to sit on so that they get the least amount of sunlight on their face. The more you think about this problem statement, the more complex it gets. Loads of physics words were exchanged that went over my head. In the below image the yellow side of the app tells you which side the sunlight will be, so you should sit on the right, in the below example. Fifteen years ago, when I moved to Bangalore to resume my job, the first training I attended was on developing a 'Global Mindset.' At the time, I didn't fully understand why my manager recommended it. However, as I progressed through various phases of my career, I realized the critical importance of that mindset shift. With each new phase of life, I've learned that adapting my mindset is key to navigating the changes and continuing on the path of progress, both personally and professionally.   According to me, here are the most importance phases in our life, that needs the mindset shift. #mindset #adaptability #growth #careertransition #ftc #cgm

Inspite of using 𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗰𝘁 𝗡𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 to build Craveo, we have not yet launched our product to IOS users. But why 🤔 1. The TG fit is much higher with Android users 2. The concept of "Sharing Intent" is completely different in IOS (something which is a major part of Craveo) 3. Laser sharp focus on single OS this omitting the subsequent hassle *and here is a not so messy demo of Craveo | India's 1st Food Comparison App*

During the recent Fullstack Hackathon organized by SRM’s Department of Computing Technologies, I teamed up with Suvan Gowri Shanker and Vijay Makkad to tackle the problem of real-time system monitoring and training progress visualization for high-performance computing systems. The challenge required building a comprehensive, user-friendly web application to monitor system data, analyze GPU and HBM memory usage, and visualize machine learning training efficiency. Despite not making the final cut, reaching the final review stage was a rewarding experience, and we learned a great deal throughout the process! The hackathon was organized by School of Computing SRMIST and sponsored by MiPhi Semicon India Private Limited, and we were fortunate to be guided by their COO Prasad Balakrishnan sir and Muniyappan K sir. Their insights helped us shape our project and understand the bigger picture. I also experimented with Rust as a backend for the first time—it was challenging yet rewarding, and I'm definitely looking forward to exploring it further. Always wondered what is passion? Everyone talks about it. You should work on your passion to become successful in your life. What is passion? It's the question I asked myself, but never got a clear answer till now. It may not be the same answer for you, but I got an answer which makes me accept it from the heart. The answer I found, Focus on happiness. Really, its that simple. If solving a mathematical problem gives you happiness thats your passion, If solving a problem in commute gives you happiness thats your passion, If solving a problem getting food to your doorstep in minutes gives you happiness thats your passion. If taking more challenges gives you happiness thats your passion. Focus on happiness, whether its job or a brand new startup to become successful. Ps: Don't take my words seriously. You may need to work on you answer 😁

Special companies -------------------- Although businesses come, stay and go and relaunch and pivot etc., there are some businesses which might just enjoy a special status on this planet. I really believe that Intel is one such company. Those folks who have graduated between about 1985 to about 2000 and additionally also have been electronics students would agree with me. All these folks started learning electronics no doubt from vaccum tube diodes in second year but they eventually ended up programming the 8085 / 80c31 / 8051 by the final year. The Dynalog and Anshuman 8085 / 8051 kits and eval boards seemed hi tech in those days, indeed the golden days. I am also nostalgic about those timing diagrams that would be asked in the exams for a given scenario. And then those wonderful books by Ramesh Gaokar, Liu-Gibson.... All this was partially or even fully possible due to the relentless, pioneering, innovative efforts by the giants like Gordon Moore, Robert Noyce and visionaries like Andrew Grove - the men-at-work behind Intel. Today as we read the difficult time that the company is going through, it feels a bit disappointing and sad. I wish they emerge victorious in these times.... The point is not why or how businesses should be run and all that management stuff -no. It is just about the quantum of work that these special companies have done which I feel is enough to change the course of our tech landscape.

IPL: Razorpay's Second Innings 🏏 The title "IPL: Razorpay’s second innings" really intrigued me. What does a fintech platform have to do with IPL? 🤔 It turns out, user behavior during an IPL match, like ordering food or gaming, had an indirect impact on Razorpay. In 2019, they struggled with traffic bursts during IPL matches, which lasted over 10 minutes—something their engineering hadn't anticipated. After this challenging IPL season, they strategized to handle future traffic bursts better. Here are the key problems they identified and solved: Problems: 🧵 Thread Exhaustion: PHP Laravel, their backend, lacked proper DB connection pooling, blocking threads and connections when the gateway took longer. 🚦 Throttling: They weren’t throttling requests, making them vulnerable to DDoS attacks. 🏦 Banking Gateway Backpressure: Banking gateways experienced 20x their normal P99s during traffic bursts. 🚥 Smart Routing Requests: There was no way to identify the load on different banking gateway nodes to route requests to less loaded ones. 📊 Alerts & Monitoring: Their alerting mechanism was too slow, giving them no time for remediation. Solutions: 🧵 Thread Exhaustion: They used ProxySQL as a layer between the backend and MySQL, deploying it as a sidecar with each backend pod for fault tolerance. 🚦 Throttling: Implemented simpler fixed window rate limiting instead of the earlier one which was a leaky bucket algorithm implementation backed by a Redis store, also moved this service to an NGINX-based proxy server as a side car with dedicated cache and new rate-limiting configurations (e.g., requests per route per merchant). 🏦 Easing Banking Gateway Backpressure through Smart Routing: Built a machine learning-based system to route transactions smartly, considering earlier payment success/failure events. This improved success rates by 60% during bursts and 4% during normal periods. 📊 Alerts & Monitoring: Using Victoria Metrics and Grafana, they developed a real-time alerting system for business and engineering KPIs. This is how Razorpay overcame their engineering challenges! The Godfather culture .. do you know what is it ?? that X person commented on your ADR / arch design .. now your course of design work will change .. that Y person reviewing your code / PR / MR .. now it will take a lot of time to merge your code .. Few X and Y have been Glamourised by others and then godfathers were created. Such culture will lead to a couple of challenges over a period of time .. Like, their (godfather) opinion/feedback is not evaluated properly as assumed it will be always better .. fresher will feel pressure when they get comments from them .. it will reduce the confidence of average employees when they get comments from them. Think on These Things !!! Few folks just want to work all time, they don’t bother about work-life balance at all. They find some reason (justification) to spend all their time behind their Job .. reasons like this year is layoff so work hard to secure the job, this year is promotion pending so work hard, this year is recession so work hard, this year I got very ineresting project so work hard. They also convince their family that they need to work hard so family need to keep low expectation from them wrt family matters and quality time. In all these the only problem is — they don’t know that it’s not the job but they are the problem. #job #worklifebalance #softwareengineer

During a high-stakes match, the scoreboard looked grim, and the pressure was palpable. Most of us felt the weight, but not Dhoni. Our captain sat coolly, his eyes tracking the game, not the numbers. It was a masterclass in leadership—only he could turn that tide. From that day, I learned that true leadership is not about yelling out tactics or barking orders. It's about maintaining that sense of calm when everything else is in chaos. Dhoni taught us all the power of staying composed, focusing on what we can control: our efforts, our determination. His focus was the process, not the result. This philosophy of calm composure didn't just lead him to incredible achievements but earned him the unwavering loyalty and respect of his team, and a legacy that transcends just his victories. Recently, I participated in a Principal Engineers' panel with Anusha Dasarakothapalli & Niusha Hakimipour, where we spoke at length about how to advocate for yourself. This discussion made me reflect on the role of self-advocacy in shaping my career. Early in my career, I struggled with creating visibility of my work. I worked hard, expecting results to speak for themselves, but they didn’t always. I quickly realized the need of using quantifiable data as a validation of my work. Whether leading a project that saved costs or delivering a critical solution, I learned to back up my contributions with measurable impact. Another critical aspect was building trust. Trust is the currency that opens doors to new opportunities. You earn it through consistent delivery, integrity, and by being the person others can rely on when it matters. When people trust you, they’ll advocate for you in the rooms where decisions are made—especially when you’re not present. Part of self-advocacy is also understanding your own strengths and growth areas. I continuously reflect and seek feedback on what I’m great at and where I need to improve. This self-awareness makes me more confident when speaking up because I know exactly where I can add value and where I still need to grow. Like many, Imposter syndrome was something I battled for a long time. I would constantly question whether I truly belonged in the spaces I occupied. The turning point for me was realizing that everyone feels that way at some point, and that’s okay. I leaned on my personal “board of advisors”—trusted mentors and peers who gave me perspective, challenged me, and helped me see my strengths when I couldn’t. I remember - there was a cross-functional large-scale project that I wasn’t sure whether I was ready for. But my mentor had faith in my skills and abilities and that project ended up being the pivotal contributor to my growth to Principal Engineer. It also reinforced that being comfortable with discomfort is necessary for advancement. To sum it up, beyond building competence and confidently speaking up for your own work, its important to strategically position yourself to be seen and heard and present your authentic self, consistently.
