🍂This is my favorite day of the year 🍂 For many od us around the world, clocks fall back an hour this weekend. As an often extremely busy, sleep deprived individual, I relish the “extra hour” of sleep. It feels like sweet relief. And gives me time to reflect. (Which makes me think— do they keep us busy so that we have no time to reflect and think about who we truly are, what we are willing to accept in our lives and where our ideal talents lie??? As many have discovered during COVID…) What I have learned from a bit of reflection is that keeping busy cuts my wings as a leader. I’m not able to be my best self if I’m constantly reacting to fires and executing rather than creating. You’re not getting your best value out of me if you piling me with work. An old boss of mine used to give us 20% of our time for personal development activities, and 80% business as usual work — so that we grow as a person. I teach #mindfulness because when you exercise that part of your brain, YOU become the tool, not anything you can buy. You become invaluable. I used to teach that we should always stop to celebrate our achievements no matter how small. Got through the day? Celebrate. completed a project? Celebrate. Did something that scared you? Celebrate. Overcame procrastination? Celebrate. This keeps people becoming better and better. But when I’m overly busy, I don’t have time to remember this because my brain is full of junk. And as a neurodivergent and highly sensitive person, I accumulate much more junk than the average person, because I process soooo much more stimulation. Being busy is a trap. 🪤 You have to remember who you truly are. That’s when you can truly make a difference. Let’s see if this one hour can help people reflect on what truly matters. #productivity #leadership #fallback

In 2023, we launched enterprise-wide engagement initiatives for Earth Month (April) and Energy Awareness Month (October). Our Earth Month initiative, aimed at fostering environmental stewardship, included videos and social media engagements that offered tips to go green, polls, volunteering activities, and a spotlight series on employees and customers making a difference. These efforts to increase employee awareness of environmental issues and their roles in them resulted in the following: - 4,340 gallons of water conserved - 482 meatless or vegan meals consumed - 1,225 pieces of litter collected - 69 hours volunteered - 33,392 minutes spent outdoors All of our colleagues have a role to play in protecting the environment and ensuring the communities in which we live and work are thriving now and in the future. We thus aim to build a culture of sustainability for our precious planet. Being an ally doesn’t mean that you’re all-knowing. It means that you’re willing to proactively educate yourself, especially when you don’t know something. Expanding your cultural, social, and racial awareness is one way to use your privilege in ways that benefit others. Acknowledge your own biases. Your education should begin by unlearning your own biases, and that starts by acknowledging that everyone has them. Often, our biases are unconscious — beliefs or stereotypes we have picked up throughout our lives, but that are ultimately harmful to marginalized groups, according to author Carmen Acton. In the article, “Are You Aware of Your Biases?,” Acton writes that “paying attention to our thoughts and examining our beliefs can help us identity assumptions we currently hold.” Here’s a list of questions that can help you uncover problematic thinking patterns and reflect on your long-held values and beliefs. Ask yourself: How do I react to people from different backgrounds? Do I hold stereotypes or assumptions about a particular social group? As a colleague or manager, do I acknowledge and leverage differences on my team? How would my team describe my leadership or communication style if they were sharing their experience of working with me to others? Do my words and actions actually reflect my intentions? In conversations, do I put myself in the shoes of the other person and empathize with their situation, even if I don’t relate to it? Learn about different identities. Allyship is a skill, and like all skills, acquiring it takes practice, according to authors Kenji Yoshino and David Glasgow. In their article, “How Much Do You Need to Know to Be an Ally?” they explain that allyship starts by learning about identities that are different from your own, and suggest starting with mainstream organizations aimed at educating the public. For instance, if you want to learn more about Sikhism, check out online resources from trusted sources like the Sikh Coalition. If you’re curious about intersex identities, the Intersex Campaign for Equality has a webpage with articles, book suggestions, and guidelines for allies. The authors also warn that verifying your sources, as opposed to blindly believing everything on the internet, is important. This may take more time and investment on your part, but the fact is, if you truly want to improve the conversations you’re having around a given topic, you must be willing to put in some effort.
