The American Trucking Associations’ advanced seasonally adjusted For-Hire Truck Tonnage Index rose by 3.6% in May, following a 1% decrease in April. In May, the index reached 115.9, up from 111.9 in April. Compared to May 2023, the index increased by 1.5%, marking the first year-over-year gain in fifteen months. In April, the index had been down 1.3% from the previous year. The index uses 2015 as the base year, set at a value of 100. Trucking is a key indicator of the U.S. economy, representing 72.6% of the tonnage carried by all domestic freight, including manufactured and retail goods. Truck tonnage continued to experience year-over-year declines in April, American Trucking Associations reported May 21. The ATA For-Hire Truck Tonnage Index dipped 1.5% year-over-year to 111.7. This marked the 14th consecutive month the index declined from the year-ago period. The result also marked a 1.2% decrease from the 113.1 reported for March. “The truck freight market remained soft in April as seasonally adjusted volumes fell for the second straight month,” ATA Chief Economist Bob Costello said. “With a rebound in freight remaining elusive, it is likely that additional capacity will leave the industry in the face of continued softness in the market.” ATA calculates its monthly tonnage index based on surveys of its membership. It also is dominated by contract freight rather than spot market freight. In calculating the index, 100 represents the year 2015. March’s result was revised down slightly from ATA’s initial reading for the month from April 23.

ATA Truck Tonnage Index fell 1.6% in June The American Trucking Associations' (ATA’s) advanced seasonally adjusted For-Hire Truck Tonnage Index fell by 1.6% in June, after increasing by 3% in May. Robert Costello, ATA Chief Economist, said, “While giving back some of the gain from May, it appears that #truck freight tonnage is slowly going in the right direction since hitting a recent low in January.” “Despite June’s decline, the second quarter average was 0.2% above the first quarter and only 0.2% below the second quarter in 2023, which are good signs that truck #freight might be finally turning the corner,” he added. Diesel prices continue to fall, with the U.S. price reaching its lowest point in the past two years. The average price per gallon is now $3.758, which is 30.3 cents lower than the price was on April 8, 2024. [September Preliminary State of the Industry: U.S. Trailers Update] - Preliminary Net Trailer Orders Indicate Pause Button Remains Pressed Preliminary net trailer orders rose about 500 units from July to August, but at 7,700 units, were lower compared to last August, down 40% y/y. Seasonal adjustment (SA) at this point in the annual order cycle boosts August’s tally to 9,500 units, down about 7% from last month. Final August results will be available later this month. May Update - State of the Industry: U.S. Classes 3-8 Used Trucks 📈 The growth rate of preliminary Class 8 same dealer used truck retail sales volumes continued to slow in April, but sales are still increasing (+1.9% m/m). “Though the margin is narrowing, the volume growth was counter to seasonality, which called for a sizable decline,” according to Steve Tam, Vice President at ACT Research. “As is often the case in the first month of the quarter, auction volumes decreased meaningfully, down 48% m/m, with wholesale activity trailing off 9.2% m/m.” Tam concluded, “April retail sales are normally very average, thanks to a nearly nine percentage point decrease from March. Second quarter sales tend to be pretty average, with June as the epitome of average. Sales are usually lackluster in July as well.” ACT’s Classes 3-8 Used Truck report provides data on the average selling price, miles, and age based on a sample of industry data. In addition, the report provides the average selling price for top-selling Class 8 models for each of the major truck OEMs – Freightliner (Daimler); Kenworth and Peterbilt (Paccar); International (Navistar); and Volvo and Mack (Volvo).
